Yoga is an ancient Hindu practice that was developed over 4,000 years ago as a means to spiritual enlightenment. Ok, so I simplified things a bit, but you can get the complete scoop here. The important takeaway from here is that you understand it is deeply rooted in Hinduism. It was only brought to the United States in the late 1800’s by Hindus.
Well all that is set to change if Christians like Kristy DiGeronimo and organizations like Christian Practicing Yoga get their way. They are part of a growing trend to infuse Yoga with Christianity, their favorite narcotic. Kristy felt drawn by the Lord himself to take yoga and meld it with Christian principles.
I felt led by the Lord to take yoga.
Kristy wasn’t always a yoga fanboy though. She said that as a Christian, she used to be weary of yoga. "I thought it’d be inviting some spirits in that were not the way I wanted to go." She’s not alone either. According to the Rev. Peter E. Prosser, who is both a priest at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach and a Christian history professor at Regent University’s divinity school says,
Yoga is designed to bring you into a spiritual realm of demonic powers.
But Kristy got around that little problem by redefining yoga. She now calls yoga a philosophy that offers tools, such as meditation, which dovetails with any religion. Yet there is also a backlash by some Christians who say yoga in any form is a slippery slope toward paganism and destructive spirits.
When I read this I couldn’t help but be reminded of my favorite woman, The God Warrior… when she ranted about how the family she was with was dark-sided because they were spiritual and not Christian. Priceless.
Aren’t all religions just different paths to the same destination? Seriously folks, we’re all headed to Disney… just getting there on different flights.
Peace

Hinduism definitely isn’t godless… it’s a bit confusing though. Depending on the school there’s a sort of cosmic entity (Brahma) that’s in some way a god. There’s also a whole bunch of minor god-like entities that are more in the public consciousness: Ganesha, Shiva, Vishnu etc.
Buddhism apparently is godless. Its aim is to allow its believers to break out of the wheel of reincarnation by achieving ultimate enlightenment.
Obviously the above are gross simplifications and should be taken with a pinch of salt. :)

Personally I’m sick of the defacto mindset of most (not all) Christians that immediately demonize anything that isn’t related to or fits their model of Christianity.
“Yoga is designed to bring you into a spiritual realm of demonic powers.” Demonic to YOU perhaps, but not to the millions who practise Hinduism/Buddism and would probably take pretty high offense to such a generalization.
I realize this priest doesn’t speak for all Christians, but most Christians I know would agree with his statement, if not vocally, in their minds at the very least.

This tendency of Christianity to absorb spiritually ‘dangerous’ practices is an old trick of theirs. To speed the assimilation of the European pagan religions in the middle ages, the church specifically chose dates for Christian holidays that coincided closely with pagan holidays. Why do you think we celebrate Christmas so close to the winter solstice every year?

Considering that yoga is now taught in gyms as something strictly for incresing flexibility, etc I don’t think Christians can be accused of hijacking it.

Does that mean young, fresh Christian stretchibitionists out there? Woohoo!

You gotta love the hypocrisy of Christians. They deny the knowledge, wisdom and mere existence of pre-Christian practices, but as we’ve seen throughout history that doesn’t stop them from completely ripping them off. “Yule tide?”. Yule is a Germanic pagan holiday. Oh yeah, they also have Christian karate too. An absolute joke. Yoga is philosophy, it does have religious roots, but its basic exercise. I do it, and I’m not a Hindu.

People often disgard Yoga saying it is a cult! Just not true. Yoga will free and cleanse the mind, but not erase it. Freewill doesn’t get removed by doing yoga.
