I myself am against any organized religion but I'm not an atheist. A brief study of the history of all major religions, possibly with the exception of Buddhism, will show that it is a political tool used to control the masses.

But I also reject the strictly materialist view that the universe is simply dead electrons screaming through an empty void. I find the universe full of great wonders, magic(of the Arthur C. Clark definition) and purpose. What this purpose is I don't understand anymore than a bacterium in my belly understands the purpose of me.

Absence of evidence actually is evidence of absence. (Did you even think about that statement before you started parroting it?) If it weren't, your failure to accept the existence of invisible gremlins, pink unicorns, and flying spaghetti monsters is great act of faith.

If atheism is a religion then not stamp collecting is a hobby.

Atheism is a faith. It requires faith to believe in a god without proof, but conversely, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You can't prove that there is no god, so in order to believe that there is no god, an atheist must have faith.

Atheism is not a faith. And I don't know how many atheists were born into it, but I don't see the necessity of giving it a second thought. (Necessity in this case meaning: a face in the sky, a booming voice, etc.)
