This story was too good to pass up on. Over the last few days in India, Hindu statues have apparently been drinking milk by the liter in temples all over. Millions of devout followers have stormed the temples with milk causing shortages in many places.
Now I find this fascinating on several fronts. First, this is much different than the usual Jesus or Mary sightings that we have here in the US. Occasionally we have the statue of Mary that weeps, but this is different as it appears to happen at many places and was verified by thousands. The first thing that came to mind was where are the pictures or video of this "miracle"? Well I have found one and it’s quite fascinating. Go ahead and give it a whirl!

Secondly, I was blown away by people’s acceptance of this event as a miracle or a sign from God. Scientists were quick to point out that this is nothing more than surface tension and capillary action at work. But followers will here none of that as it diminishes their personal miracle. It seems that people just want to believe so bad that all logic and reason is just carelessly discarded. This incident should be viewed through sharp contrasts in education among India’s billion-plus people. Abhilasha Kumari, a sociologist in New Dehli, said it best…
Many people in India straddle two different worlds one world of scientific education and high-tech jobs versus another steeped in their centuries-old beliefs in supernatural phenomena. And they see no contradiction in this.
I’d love to hear from some readers in India on this. Do you believe this was a miracle or science in action?

From Wikipedia:
“Seeking to explain the phenomenon, scientists from India’s Ministry of Science and Technology travelled to a temple in New Delhi and made an offering of milk containing a food colouring. As the level of liquid in the spoon dropped, it became obvious that after the milk disappeared from the spoon, it coated the statue beneath where the spoon was placed. With this result, the scientists offered capillary action as an explanation; the surface tension of the milk was pulling the liquid up and out of the spoon, before gravity caused it to run down the front of the statue. This explanation did nothing to reduce the numbers of faithful rushing to the temples, however, and queues of people carrying pots, pans, and buckets of milk continued to gather.”
Do they not notice the large pools of milk gathering at the bases of these statues? Seriously, I’m open to the idea of miracles happening, but if some ass-clown called me over to my church to show me how a Jesus statue (not that my church has one) was drinking milk, I’d say, “Yeah, looks like He’s real thirsty, there. So thirsty, in fact, that He’s letting it all dribble right down His chin! Now quit wasting my time and clean up the mess He made all over the carpet.”
I think it would be more appropriate to say “carefully”. I recall ignoring the obvious when I was once religious. Never did I once observe anything supernatural, but I told myself and others that I did. I knew it was self-deception but facing reality seemed so hard.
good question about the statues leaking…
wonder if it’s a miracle if the urinate? then they’d hace two great wonders in one :)
having spend some time in India, it is indeed strange to see someone who is properly educated and knows about the climate and such, make an offering to the gods for rain…
This is their way of live, religion is still totally integrated into life, instead of the Church — Life seperation we see in the west
think the statues will smell funny and start cracking apart in time?
The problem rears it’s head when sometimes the idols drink milk and sometimes not. If this is just capillary action and surface tension then the idols should appear to drink milk all the time. But that does not happen. Makes you wonder. :)
RE:5 No it does not. I probably have to do whit the humidity in the air and how saturated the statues are.
I wonder if any other orifice also drinks milk. If the statue is indeed pourous, and capillary action takes place on any pourous flat vertical surface… then the nose could drink too..etc.
Obviously, science in action. But that hasn’t stopped people from believing in “miracles”.
Couple of days, there was another story about the sea tasting sweet in Mumbai and whole bunch of people claimed it was a “miracle”. Others were too busy trying to explain that it was only flood waters from neighboring state and it is not healthy to drink the water.
I guess it is in the psyche of human mind. If it can’t be explained by your own mind, then it is must be a miracle. Never mind the saner explanations from billion other minds.
Early in that clip, you can clearly see the milk dribbling down the statues chin!! Oh gee, some miracle!! I’m ashamed to be of Indian descent when I see this kind of idiotic stuff!
I agree that there should be a bit of surface tension. But having given the milk by myself, i need to tell you that the amount of milk given on those specified days, was so much that it cannot account for a small pool of milk. It is easy to criticize by sitting near a computer and commenting on a clip. I suggest the readers to introspect little further that many very educated youths (esp. in physics) were baffelled by this event as we all saw that it is more than some physical phenomenon
Let me add further, that many idols which drank the milk refused to consume in future days. If it is a simple principle of surface tension, where was those surface tension went on other ordinary days?
“I agree that there should be a bit of surface tension. It’s also easy to criticize by living in the real world. Even if it wasn’t surface tension, which I’m fairly sure it was, why assume it’s some kind the phenomonon is caused by something supernatural, instead of something scientific that no one’s thought of yet?
“I recall ignoring the obvious when I was once religious. Never did I once observe anything supernatural, but I told myself and others that I did.”
I have observed many things supernatural that have no obvious explanation even after careful consideration. I would say that telling others that you have seen such things when in fact you didn’t is one of the reasons people have a hard time believing any “miracle” or supernatural event, even if it is true.
Yeah, I’m as Indian as they come and I was appalled to see the kind of widespread curiosity this ‘miracle’ commanded. In my city, the enthusiasm ebbed significantly when some college students demonstrated that the idols were indiscriminately ‘drinking’ whatever was offered (including beer and tadi – a local Indian liquor) to them.
They were castigated for their impiety, but it did the trick.
people listen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what r u doing?
How can a statu drink something?
Science can explain it very easily
i `ve seen tons of people going to temples in india on some indian news channel, but i only saw milk dripping from the spoon to the ground.i didn`tn see thing which will convince me any way to believe in this “miracle”.well .i just want to let u know that it is very stupid to believe in these things. How can a statu which we human creat would be a God. It is only a statu,it can`t hear thing,it can`t talk, than why do u guys call it a god.
no offence but i need an explanation, can someone provide me with an explanation, plz contact me on this id(rani_b111@yahoo.co.uk). Most of humans including my self believe that God is greatest of all ,than how can the god be looking like an elephant etc. how can god be looking like an animal? if the spirit of god lyes in an ordinary statu who controls the rest of the world.why would a God will need a statu to keep his spirit? why can`t he be any where without having been seen. why do you guys have to worship an idol which can`t even look after itself. God can do anything and can`t look after himself,it is weired ,ain`t it? e.g. if a statu falls on the floor ,no offence, and breaks would the spirit be gone. u see god as statu can`t look after itself than how do u expect it to look after you and listen to ur prayers, u can worship god without seeing him only if u r a true believer.so please please and please search other religions and try ur very best to follow the right one. there r so many religions e.g. christianity, islam, jewism sikhism ,hinduism etc……… but trust me is u search all the religions with a pure heart , the knowledge will be sent to u by the un seen almighty Allah. and trust me u will become a well practising muslim. so plz, plz search other religions . may Allah help u find the right one .
stupidshindus how the fucku think a status can drink milk lol
How can a statu which we human creat would be a God. It is only a statu,it can`t hear thing,it can`t talk, than why do u guys call it a god.
let me tell you something. this is what happens when people start blindly believing. hinduism is not a religion of idiots; they have been offering their gods milk for centuries. it is not because anyone thinks that they are actually feeding a rock. it has always been regarded as a symbolic gesture.
and for those of you who ask “oh, how can you worship a statue?”, no one is worshipping the statue. they are worshipping an idea. isn’t that what god is, an idea? the different gods are different manifestations, different aspects of the one true universal spirit, the SINGLE god, called brahma, the creator. that, in it’s essence, is the basis of hinduism. praying to a god or a statue is like praying to one of god’s many personalities. to hindus, god is everywhere; he transcends what is tangible; he is the universal soul, and that is unfathomable for people. by representing him in a human/animal/whateverfashionpleasesthem, it is easier for them to comprehend, and thus easier to accept. haven’t humans always tried to rationalize and chose the easiest solution?
oh, what a shocker, hindus are monotheistic, i guess we were wrong about the whole ‘pagan’ thing. maybe if you just opened your eyes and saw the whole concept before you start talking (or typing in this case), it might just make sense.
and who is anyone to comment on belief?
so gabriel sends muhammed a message from god (in his dreams), and what he says must be accepted as truth? let’s forget about the fact that as a merchant, muhammed was WELL acquainted with christianity and judaism, and from his wanderings in the desert, and as he lay to sleep in the cave, he could have had a dream!? so it could have in fact been that his beliefs had manifested them in his subconscious, in his dreams. but then again, it could have happened, you can never know.
but thats not what matters, is it? that is not the POINT of the religion. religion is merely a tool to bring people closer to god. people create religious stories with symbols as a a way for them to accept god, and in the end, all that matters is whether or not you acknowledge him, not whether or not you think statues can drink milk or that jesus created miracles. the problem stems from when people take a radical perspective, and believe everything without understanding the symbolism and the meaning of it all.
“religion is merely a tool to bring people closer to god.”
Most of here dont believe in a god, so religion is even more useless to us.
“and who is anyone to comment on belief?”
Just because its someone’s belief doesnt mean it is for some reason above questioning. If you dont discuss things like this you are just blindly following what everyone else tells you.
“and who is anyone to comment on belief?â€
Well, if your belief is to hack me to pieces because I don’t share it I think I can comment on it and not respect it.
this religion is soooo fake. shall i tell you why, take the idol and throw it on the ground what happens?…. so can you fix him or can he fix him self, so what happens to the spirits in side it.
let me tell you some thing i wont waste my time or your time. Change your religion. change it to any of the 3 followings Islam, Jew or chrisitian. You know why because we believe in 1 God and that he is every where and cant be seen. not like your fake Elephants or Rats or 8 arms men or the sun or human. ask your selfs 1 QUESTION WHY DO I BELIEVE IN ANIMAL OR STATUS? wake you people before its tooooooooooooo late. PEACE OUT
“Change your religion. change it to any of the 3 followings Islam, Jew or chrisitian.”
Thats gotta be the worst evangelism iv ever heard. the fact is its hard to change your faith, in the same way you cant understand believing in this god i cant understand believing in yours.
This is Fake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all u there don’t believe this…..
really funny!!!!!!!!!!!
“This is Fake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
So are the miracles the Qur’an and Bible. You don’t believe either of those, do you? It’d be “really funny!!!!!!!!!!!” if people didn’t kill each other over those books.
Isn’t this an opportunity to be condescending and superior to our ex-colonials? (Sorry America)I mean, how the hell does this sort of nonsense get any air-time? why is it so hard for so many of you to accept this as a miracle?
RELIGION IS MAN MADE. AS SAID BEFORE IT IS A TOOL (WHICH MAN MADE) TO BRING PPL CLOSER TO GOD. WHAT IS GOD? WHO IS GOD? ASK YOUSELF THIS QUESTION, DEFINIE GOD? IT SHOULDN’T MATTER WHAT YOUR RELGIION IS AND OR WHO YOU PRAY TO, WHAT SHOULD MATTER IS THAT YOU DO GOOD AND LOOK AT OTHERS AS IF THEY TOO ARE A PART OF GOD, CUZ WE ALL ARE. BLESS!!!
Logic is man made and buried in mind– the feeble mind.
You can have your logic and toss the word gods around as counterfeit money. These people are alive and beautiful. Belief and beauty will always surpass–black logic. All logic is ill without this, the zero.
But really you’re insufferable. Keep your English death.
And to those of you who are intolerant to other’s faith, it only speaks to weakness of yours. It’s idiocy to speak of theirs when you haven’t any idea or perception of their language or religion. Stop envagilizing, it’s really disheartening to see you spreading your own misery onto others.
Pass the joint Stefan, you’ve had enough.
May peace be upon you all. I am always a skeptic of all things, however I do believe that idols of our Hindu brothers were drinking milk. I did not see this with my own eyes, but I have many Hindu friends that were eye witness to this phenomenon, and these people were of high character.
In Islam, there is a very easy explanation and reason for this. Just as when Moses (May peace be upon him) descended from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments, he found the very people he gave the message of One God to, worshipping an idol of a golden calf. The Israelites told Moses that the golden calf miraculously was saying “moo”, and that there must be divine intervention in this amazing account.
Just like the mooing of the golden calf, the weeping Mary (May peace be upon her) and the thirsty idols, there is an intervention of some sort, and this has been confused with divine intervention.
In Islam, we believe in the Jinn. The Jinn are invisible creatures that we share this temporal plane with. In Biblical terms, we can call them demons. Although Satan is a Jinn, not all Jinn are bad. The sole purpose of the evil Jinn (followers of Satan) are to mislead mankind. The easiest way for them to mislead mankind is to trick us into worshipping other than One God, without partners. In Islam, associating anyone or anything with God is the most devious sin.
The Jinn are very powerful, and are capable of entering into people (demonic possession) or entering into objects (statues, pictures etc…) That is why the golden calf said moo, Mary weeps, and the idols drink milk. We then attribute divine attributes to things man made, and take away these attributes from what made man.
Information on Jinn, Islam and Tawheed (worshipping God without partners) is readily available. Visit any of your local mosques, entry is available to all. You can find one at http://www.islamicfinder.net
Jazakallah – all thanks are to God, and thank you all for my opportunity to write this.

After reading all the postings, I am a bit astonished of some of the ignorance plastered all over this thing. Some of you really need to address serious issues dealing with faith. Whether this is a miracle or a scientific explaination, the real phenomenon is that those people believed in what they saw, what they experienced and that gave them more faith in themselves and in thier religion. It’s not about figuring out if this is hoax or not, but it’s about realizing how strong and powerful we can become if we just choose to believe. Belief in anything will obtain power. I did go to the temple and I tried this and the statues drank the milk. I understand all this about the scientific explainations, but some things are better left as a miracle, for what it is. The Hindu religion teaches the utmost faith in oneself and in god will bring happiness to one. I have lived by this my whole life and I see this as true. People, who we are and what we believe is all we really have in this world, what gives anyone the right to take that away?? for all you ignorance people who don’t know a damn thing about society, about faith, about belief, you should not post anything about Hinduism. I can’t believe someone on here would actually say change your religion and make fun of what Hindus believe. You need to stop being scared of what you don’t know and take the time to unlearn your stupidity and try to be educated. As far as this miracle, I do believe it was a miracle and I do believe strongly in my faith and what I believe, believe god was showing us how powerful we can become if we just keep believing.
Jen
“You need to stop being scared of what you don’t know and take the time to unlearn your stupidity and try to be educated”
Some of us one here would say the same thing to you. Further have faith in something that is false only leads someone to believe in a lie and spread that lie further. To deny a truth or fail to investigate a cause of something so far unexplained denies us knowledge that will help us remove our own ignorance. Faith is one thing. Faith in something untrue is potentially very dangerous.

I am reading an awful lot of criticism here. It is one thing to comment on the event at hand another thing to completely criticize someone else’s religious beliefs.
I don’t think the statues was drinking the milk nor do I believe in the milk evaporating on a hot day or whatever reasons some of these scientist were coming up with for this event. The majority of those scientific explanations sounded more miraculous than the said miracle itself.
Hello Lucid Mark,
What’s wrong with criticizing someone’s religious beliefs? Why is that system of human thought any different from others? You wouldn’t object to anyone criticizing the excesses of capitalism, the intractable abstractness of modern art, the philosophy of utilitarianism, or Russian foreign policy, would you? Granted, you may disagree with the criticism, and the religious are welcome to do so. But you wouldn’t say that we shouldn’t criticize these things.
So I ask again, what makes religious thought so special that no one should criticize it?
Dear Gita,
Post 18, you’re absolutely right!
“oh, what a shocker, hindus are monotheistic,” Only One God, that’s divided into several units.
And also about the statues being abstract, it’s to have something to focus on, it’s only material.
You’re one of the few who has adequate knowledge of Hinduism, you’re a good person. Keep it ip!

God does not want any graven image of himself…this is the devil in disguise.
“You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth” (Exodus 20:4 KJV)
The bible says in 2nd cor 11:14-15 says that satan and his angels also appears as angels of Light…
This is simply the work of satan and hes here to deceive many. To know read the bible the infallible word of God. The bible says you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Who is the truth? Jesus. He has defeated the devil on the cross and hes given us the right to become the son of God.

I am trying to understand why this happened. I know the whole surface tension explanation, but where does the water go if it isn’t puddled on the floor? Absorbed? How would it be absorbed into a metal statue? Why does it only happen at certain times?
I have taken a bunch of college physics classes, so I’m not completely ignorant when it comes to that kind of stuff.. but I can’t figure out where the milk is going.
It’s pretty clear in the first part of the video that milk is dripping down the front.. I think the guy just spilled it because I’ve seen other videos where you cannot see anything running down the statue or on the floor.

Man u muslims and chritians can have a god , their messengers and angels and whatever else but when it comes to hindu religion then you become such sceptics. the problem is that you people from islam and chritianity have this in your nature and it has been there for same thousands of years. why do you think there are so many muslims and christians in the world… it’s bcoz your religions were forced upon people “mostly” and your religions are full of bullshit that you people cant see past. hinduism is not a religion but a collection of teaching you people will never understand the depths of even if you tried coz thats who you are. ask a hindu about your religion and he will atleast be able to say something about it but ask a non hindu such as muslims or christian about hinduism and all you get is that there are so many gods in hinduism. from what i can figure out is that hinduism is structured more like a govt of a country where each minister is incharge of an area of responsibility…and above those are the 3 presidents or prime ministers if u like…one for creation , one for preservation and one for afterlife. in this life while you are living the most important would be the prserver of the universe for the duration of it’s existence and the destroyer is equally as important coz that’s where your afterlife is headed. life in universal sense is very very short mind u. now it is said that even they (3 lords)dont last for ever and are replaced when the universe as we know ends and creation restarts…meaning nothing lasts forever. now beyond the 3 top beings (even hindus dont call them god in that sense but refer to them as lord mostly) is the real begining and that is god “if u like”..the begining of creation and what that is is up to u to find out. now coming up with stuff like gods son and allah is not any different then hindus coming up with their concepts. jesus didnt even look like we are shown to believe and their statues are worshipped…what hypocrits. has any one from either islam or chritianity ever tried to find out how much their religions lag behind the knowlegde imparted by hinduism or you all just plain stupid having your religion forced upon u too. i have muslim mates and i know a lot about islam and even know how to pray in islam i.e the words to their prayers from a-z and have gone to chritian camps and therefore know a lot about it as well as i took part in bible quizzes and i have been to hindu prayers and gathering … and i must tell you that, boy is there a difference in the way knowledge about things are imparted especially between islam and hinduism. in islam they put down other religions (namely chritians and hindus)in their gatherings, just to prove a point about their religious point of view…but if you go to a hindu gathering the preacher would actually refer to a quote in the bible or koran to impart further knowledge, if he wants to make his point about something. man what a diff. chritians don’t know any better than themselves in a way..you people should watch penn & teller??? the magicians talk about the facts in the bible. anyway the closest any religion comes to explain about the origins of the universe as argued by science is hinduism ..which was written thousands of years earlier ..now please islam on that topic..please heard and read it all before.. and i say no comparision…and that’s a fact. muslims are the worst.. they have to put down others to feel better about themselves and at times christians as well but you don’t see such things coming from hindus coz they don’t give a shit about the crap that islam teaches or chritianity for that matter…coz non of those religions come close to the depth of spiritual knowledge imparted by hinduism. as for the suckers sitting at your computers writting stuff you dont know about … hear it from me ..a non hindu.. i was a skeptic when i heard about this in 1995 and so went to an indian mates house ..as i go to a muslim mates house for eid and a chritian mates house for christmas and yes i have a muslims and christians in my wider family relations. anyway i fed milk (a table spoon)to a brass statue of ganesh which was about 4inches tall “at the most” and this is in new zealand..along with about 20 other people and i tried again and again and it drank all the milk…whats interesting is that i did not even touch the spoon to ganeshs trunk but held it few mm away. a brass statue must i remind you. that has never happen again after about those 2-3 days, even though we have tried it. as for one comment about it drinking anything ya so what it’s your karma that counts at the end and not what the statue would refuse to drink. statues are a symbol of our menifestation and artistic expression of our beliefs and the best way to bring it to life. statues in hindu temples are awakened through prayers and rituals for days before it is open to the public. could sound stupid to some but thats what i mean …the religion is so powerful it shows in the nature of hindus itself…if you know what i mean. hinduism is not practised the same around different parts of india nor around the world for that matter but thats what makes it so great as a religion. the muslims could not conquer hinduism for hundreds of years even through their violence like they did to other religions in other countries and converted them to islam…why coz that’s the power of good over evil. could go on forever but it’s a shame people are so ignorant about hinduism. again i’m not religious or a hindu…but from the knowlegde i have gained and there’s only two or 3 proper ways of gaining proper knowlegde.. to me the depth of hindu philosophy is the essence of it’s beauty. Don’t hate any religion but just fail to understand the arrogance and ignorance of people associated with some. final words…i was at a hindu female mates house 1995 with 5 other mates when i was told about what was happening…so this happened next….a “BRASS” statue 3-4 inches tall and about 20 people fed it milk , as did i and not a drop fell on the surface supporting the statue. “did not touch it to ganeshs trunk like i see some people did, but the milk went in seconds” ..tried it 3 times.. now that has not happen with that statue a day after that and ever since. this was the time it was reported around the world a day or two earlier. how lucky was i. for those who are skeptical well you should be, coz u missed out. maybe next time in some other life. those that talk about science a lot will never understand the teaching of great saints ..who were not stupid people as u see from their knowledge. hinduism is not a religion per se but full of teaching enlightened people from thousands of years…long before islam or christianity or any other mordern religion existed. so go out and read a lil more peolpe before u comment on things with your controlled minds. will never happen i know but anyway…. peace!
Ahmed the 8 arms and 8 heads you talking about is the different menifestations or attributes ..if that’s that right word to use of a depicted diety and not the actual appearance u dumbass muslim. I’d rather believe in hinduism then islam or christianity anytime. koran and the bible was written many many years ( 300 hundred in islam after the so called people were actually alive idiot)..so get your own facts right first. The jinn in islam as someone said above or the devil in chritianity depicts these events of milk drinking …mate history is evidence of the evil past’s of islam and christianity …..which hasn’t changed since those religions came into existence and that’s hard fact. unlike hindu’s and hinduism in comparision. me as a non hindu or religious person can see the hard facts and just laugh at the people following hundreds of years of doctored text by caliphs in islam or the romans to the bible. what a shame. there’s no real facts on any of about those man outside the revelations of bible or the koran to actually write a single page.
fedupman,
If after reading your rantings you are a spokesperson for Hinuism, that would be the best reason not to partake! Though I am certain you made sense to yourself! I hope you live in a state that allows people to carry guns & protect themselves.
Fedupman, please, try that again with some spelling and, proper intepunction and paragraphs. I can’t (and won’t) read walls of text like that.
Man u muslims and chritians can have a god , their messengers and angels and whatever else but when it comes to hindu religion then you become such skeptics.
Anyway i fed milk (a table spoon)to a brass statue of ganesh which was about 4inches tall “at the most†and this is in new zealand..along with about 20 other people and i tried again and again and it drank all the milk…whats interesting is that i did not even touch the spoon to ganeshs trunk but held it few mm away.
Final words…i was at a hindu female mates house 1995 with 5 other mates when i was told about what was happening…so this happened next…a “BRASS†statue 3-4 inches tall and about 20 people fed it milk , as did i and not a drop fell on the surface supporting the statue…. “did not touch it to ganeshs trunk like i see some people did, but the milk went in seconds†..tried it 3 times.. now that has not happen with that statue a day after that and ever since.
Hinduism is not a religion per se but full of teaching from enlightened people from thousands of years…long before islam or christianity or any other mordern religion existed. So go out and read a lil more peolpe before u comment on things with your controlled minds. Will never happen i know but anyway…. peace!
That’s all i can do for you for now alcari. In a rush as always man!.
RRock i don’t understand your statement mate so try again and i am not a spokesman for hinduism …infact i dont follow it myself.. though i do meditate …but just tired of muslims and christians thinking that they got something good going mate and always negative about everyone else and about each other at times. I did make sense to myself coz i read a lot and talk facts and not someone like you who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Guns and what??? …RRock get real.. i come from a country where we live without the fear of getting bombed by muslims mate…and you sound like one. Although i agree that the Americans suck as well and their history shows that too. If you muslims and christians can give then you be prepared to take it. I dont need to convince nobody about anything mate..just think some of you idiots should get out more. My statments come in light of what i experience and see and hear matey and not just religion bashing without knowlegde.
