Steven Colbert decided to liven up the 2006 Emmys by calling the audience a bunch of Godless Sodomites. He continued to poke fun at the Emmys, Hollywood, and losing to Barry Manilow. Both these guys are at the top of their game and I hope they stick around for awhile. This is a great clip that I just wanted to share with you all.

Heh amusing… while I find overt displays of that sort of evangelicanism very uncomfortable (I don’t know whether to laugh or what!) they made me chuckle a bit.
Meanwhile, I hate audiences. Where better to see group mentality than in a room full of airhead hollywood types.

Not to defend airhead hollywood types, but it seemed to me that the segment was hilarious and the audience got it. Both making fun of anti-liberal sentiments and making fun of reality TV were receieved as the humor they were. Should they have not laughed?

What’s even funnier is hearing people on the social-conservative end feeling like Steven Colbert just stood up for their side. Has satire been completely lost on some people?

There’s satire and then there’s a devout catholic telling a crowd of people that they’re all godless sodomites - it hits a little close to the mark. I dunno, maybe its just because I have very little idea who this Steven dude is apart from what Wikipedia tells me!

Actually, the best satire comes from people who are very intimate with what they are satirizing. So it isn’t really so strange or awkward. Notice in the Wikipedia article that Mr. Colbert was raised with an emphasis on intellectualism and the idea that is OK to question the Chruch. Overall, you’ll find that Catholics have some of the more liberal views in Christendom (except for a few specific things like birth control). They even teach Evolution in Catholic schools. They are not fundamentalists. Fundamentalists HATE Catholics. Catholic priests are actually taught to interpret the Bible in context and with an open mind. They generally have a very schollarly understanding of the Bible and their religion.
I dunno, seems to me that Catholicism has been pretty much defanged. It isn’t the oppressive religion it once was.

Agnostic, you don’t really get who Colbert is. He is very much a liberal. He used to work for the Daily Show. He was in character there, the same way he is on his show. He calls his show (out of character only) a parody of “The O’Reilly Factor”. He acts extremely conservative/fundamentalist, but, doing so, he points out the hypocrisy inherent inside of them. Check out some clips from his show on YouTube sometime… you will see exactly what I mean.
