Over the last few years, the US has been struggling with the public adoption of religion, specifically Christianity. With everything from prayer in public schools to removing Ten Commandment monuments from public buildings. There’s gay marriage, intelligent design, "In God We Trust" on the currency and so forth. The list goes on and on as I’m sure you’ve seen on my site and on the news. There has been no end to the feuding and it has only resulted in a more divided and oppressed country.
Many nations, especially Europeans, have laughed openly at the US for this very matter. Well that time is over my techno-listening, multilingual, not-as-obese-as-Americans, peace loving, equal rights supporting European friends. Yes, you’re days are numbered too. The Fourth Reich is looming over the horizon and there’s little you can do. Nope, the US isn’t going to save your butts this time.
It should be no surprise to anyone that once again Germany is to blame… more specifically German chancellor Angela Merkel. After a closed meeting with the Pope, Merkel unveiled her plan for a better European Constitution.
We spoke about freedom of religion. We spoke about the role of Europe and I emphasized the need for a constitution and that it should refer to our Christian values.
Nothing says religious freedom like carving Jesus in to the EU Constitution. I’m sure all the Muslims, Jews, and Atheists will support this one.
Good luck Europe and welcome to the club :)

From the article:
“Angela Merkel threw her weight behind Pope Benedict’s campaign to recognise Europe’s Christian heritage.”
Hmm, seems to me that Europeans would rather forget their Christian roots… especially the Catholic part. What did it ever do for them but oppress the people, fuel wars, and drive colonization (and therefore oppression) of other countries? Look at Ireland. Maybe Americans have forgotten what it was like to live under the iron fist of the Church, but certainly Europeans haven’t.
They got plenty of nice old churches that are mostly used as tourist attractions. Seems pretty ideal to me. All the economic prosperity from tourism without all the actual church stuff going on. If only we Americans could turn churches into museums. Although I’m not sure how many people would care to see a bunch of ugly white boxes with crosses on top.

My only thought is one of profound irony…

Just when you thought it was safe to go to liberal Europe. Maybe this is why all those northern germanic and nordic metal groups sing about hunting Christians through the dark forests to clean out the father-land.

maybe you don’t know the situation in italy.
in our country the last week the ex premier berlusconi said that italy must remains catholic and without multiculturalism.
in our country every fucked day a fucked cardinal speaks in tv about everything in a fatwa style, and the drama is that the politicians agree!

Luca has reason, we joined the club… somehow like 1700 years ago and we are still fighting

Come on, be serious. We’ve already had people asking for references to christianity to be put into the European Constitution. From Poland, for instance.
It has been denied, and will be again. There is no way this will happen. Angie knows it. This is just random chat to please the christian electors.

Note within about 10 years Turkey may become the first majority Muslim full member of the EU. Thus, I think it hardly fair to suggest that one vote seeking statement from one head of one of the member states represents the overall viewpoint of the EU.

everything for the voters. seriously, the christians will remeber this one and the rest of us will have forgotten tomorrow.
still, irony aplenty here

“This is just random chat to please the christian electors. ”
how very much a parallel to america. the sad thing is that in our country its becoming less and less like random chat, and they are actually changing things for the worse. and lets not forget that pretty much every founding document we have references “god”.

everything for the voters. seriously, the christians will remeber this one and the rest of us will have forgotten tomorrow.
The big problem is that christians want their opponents to dismiss things like this as pointless. The more apathy you have when they bring issues like this into the voting arena, the easier it is for them to slip it under the radar come election day. We’re seeing stuff like this in America all the time. The school board in the county where I live voted to put warning labels on science books (Cobb County for those wondering, so close to Atlanta, but yet still so back-woods at times). No one really took notice till the vote passed and the Christians got what they wanted, a warning label that said evolution and taxonomy wasn’t really science. Luckily people picked up on it fast enough to get the vote repealed, but it was still scary.
It may be funny when leaders talk like this, but don’t laugh too hard, some times they’re serious, and sometimes the people that vote for them buy it.

Merkel is inventive and smart. Not to be underestimated.
Still I wouldn’t take this comment too serious. We do have dogmatic christians over here as well, but they don’t dominate major counties and cities. Our school books still teach evolution and it is hardly being questioned.
Merkel’s comment, as I guess, is more related to the “Leitkultur” discussion (translates as “leading culture” probably): The idea that there is a certain way of life in Germany (and all the European Union) that is dominant and into which immigrants should integrate themselves. As if we had not put free choice of way of life in the constitution.

I agree with atheist.
This statement Merkel made was just for the press. Maybe for voters too. But mainly this was something politicians use to say to such an occassion. This is nothing you should confound with christian fundamentalism or something like that. Even if her party is the “Christian Democratic Union”. What makes me so sure is that there is no real discussion about these things in the everyday politics here. Wich means, no serious politician sais that if we would return to our christian roots our problems (like the revolts in paris) would be solved. Luckily politics and religion is still separated. So don’t worry about this one weird sentence.

I always suspected US neocon interference in the German election (not to mention many others). This would be an expected result.

sebtob, I think you’re mistaken. If they’re going to do this thing, they have to start somewhere. And because of the current climate, they have to start slowly. But start is what they are doing. Once people get used to accepting the “xian heritage” crap, it will escalate. If these people are not stopped, in 20-30 years you will no longer recognize the place.
