I don't see any reason any religious figures should be given any kind of special treatment when it comes to freedom of speech. Not everyone believes god chose Jesus for anything (or in god(s) at all), and I think that's the point. The religious say horrible, unjustified things about atheists all the time. Second, I call bullshit on the Catholic league and Bill Donahue. They want an apology because they want to scare other newspapers into not printing critical cartoons. They're mentioning the apology to the gay community because they want to look like martyrs, kind of like daddy Jesus. They want to be able to point to the issue and say, "They treat us worse than gays that liberal media does!" A message that a lot of homophobic America is receptive to, and which will build sympathy.
