Hats off to The Right Reverend Rabbi Judah for dropping this one on my lap. Check out his site if you haven’t already! Now back to business…
Grab your ankles folks because we have another Bible camp documentary coming your way. Move over Jesus Camp, here comes Camp Out, the world’s first and only documentary on a gay Christian overnight camp for kids.
Follow four girls and six boys aged 14-18 as they take a strange journey down an awfully lonely road. They deal with their sexuality, rejection from the church, and each other. The tone is set early on when one of the kids asks…
what if we’re all wrong… what if we are going to hell?
That’s pretty heavy duty considering I was just popping zits and scratching my @ss at that age. Nonetheless, it appears to be quite intriguing. But watch the trailer and then the Jesus Camp one. The first thing I noticed immediately is that these supposedly socially defunct kids that have a one-way ticket to hell come across a helluva lot more normal than the Jesus freaks do. Take a look and decide for yourself.

Yeah, i’ll take the defunct ones any day. Then again, I (almost) fall in the same category, so my vote might not count.

I have been involved with camps that deal with Christianity, traumatic brain-injured children/teens, and autistic children/teens. What I have yet to come across are camps geared towards kids who know they are gay, but want to continue to instill the religious aspect of their christian faith. Unfortunately, the way I see it, putting one with the other is extremely difficult: Even in this day and age where states are slowly adopting same-sex marriages coupled with treating a domestic couple of the same sex as if they were married in the eyes of insurance and benefits. From what the majority states, you can be one, but not the other. I’m in the minority that agrees that decisions people make regarding sexuality or religion is a private matter plain and simple. I think that it’s just too bad that in many ways, our society is still backwards when it comes to this issue. If God loved the world so much, that would include everyone who lives alternative lifestyles. It would be great if people who were avid Christians follow his love.

I am Christian, out and proud since early 90’s after college. I was raised Christian, by Christian parents, who never required me to be anything but who I am. I was never brainwashed by parents or my church or church family. I was taught to question–even doubt–to strengthen my faith and think for myself. My denomination is often called “The Thinking Church”. Thank the God of my understanding for my parents, church and friends (owe that all to my parents). I was taught being gay is my God given humanity, nothing out of love is sin and that there are several paths to God. I have friends of different faiths and of no faith. I live in MISSISSIPPI and I’m a member of my Church of youth with my spouse and we are active and a couple in our church. In fact, my entire family (parents, siblings, and some neices and nephews) met my spouse and loved him before I had ever met him (I lived away after college). Praise Jesus and the Higher Power of your understanding too. :-) God wants me to love my neighbor and I do. PS: The folks who declare they live according to the literal bible—NONE of you do.

I recently saw the documentary film “Camp Out” and was very moved and impressed. I would like to contact Thomas West, one of the participants in the camp (and film). I notice that he posted a comment on this blog almost 3 years ago, but his Myspace site is now closed. Does anyone know how to contact him? If so, he may email me directly at: ianllb@hotmail.com (or if you have any news of him, I would appreciate hearing from you or Thomas).
Thanks!
Ian
