Now, I want to clarify one thing right off the bat here. I do not like Michael Moore anymore than I do George Bush. They are both nut-jobs on the political spectrum with Moore way to the left and Bush way to the right. Now with that said I have to give Moore mad props on this little nugget of laughter.
Moore has a show on Bravo called, "The Awful Truth". I haven’t seen an episode yet, but from what I can tell it’s inline with his documentaries about on how bad the US is and how the right is evil, blah blah blah. But this clip from an episode had me laughing. Everyone remembers the good ole Phelps family and their love for homosexuals. I covered them in the past. Well Moore, being the crusader of truth and justice, decides to bring Phelps a little taste of his own medicine.
I’m not going to ruin it for you, so just watch the clip. I hope it puts a smile on your face :)

I’m not sure if Michael More and Gorge Bush cancel each other out or lead to some big explosion.
In any case, was quite fun.
Would be great to see Moore and Bush on one stage.
Bush is known for his primiive opinions,at least I consider it primitive,i guess he got it from his father.
Moore is doing a great thing,it’s really pahetic and redecilous to have a law which prevents people from being gay or lesbian,it’s no body’s bussiness.
I still can’t believe that there are people who think hat gays and lesbians shouldn’t live among us,they’re human beings just like us,i hope this ignorence will fade quickly.
man i seriously despise those anti gay people
i bet they eat shrimp (also an abomination under the bible)
Sadly, all religions have those kind of ‘I back up my personnal opinions and biggotry with the sacred texts, but only thoses I want’.

My severe hatred of Michael Moore was just lessened a bit by that. Way to really stick it to an inbred whack job like phelps!
Adding fuel to their already dieing fire.
Phelps and ALL Christians are not following God’s commands. According to the Bible, they are supposed to KILL homosexuals, not protest their funerals. Their God commands it! Every single Christian is commanded by god to kill gays. Not only do these people pick and choose which verses to read, but they also pick and choose which commands to follow! It just goes to show you how unreasonable religion is.
homosexuals are gay… ;-)
they shouldn’t be prosecuted like this, it’s not right. but i will cherish the day when michael moore gets shot. i only wish it had been charlton heston, when MM started talking smack in his house.
Like in all arguments there’s always one person who follows the bad guys! Better to follow the herd then say what’s morally right, isn’t that so Boris!
For Moore to stand up against the biggest homophobe in America, next to Bush, I take my hat off to him. Using the same ‘in your face’ tactics as Philips has used was brilliant.
It would be totally funny with the freaky mentality Philips operates under if not for the fact that he pickets the funerals of these people and what that does to the grieving families. He’s sick, and I want to know why he hasn’t been arrested… he has the same mentality as Osama Bin laden!
I don’t get all the Michael Moore hating? Sure, he can be a little full of himself sometimes, but he is generally on the correct side of the issues and he is damn funny. And you know, his movies reach a much larger audience than most bloggers can ever hope to see. Is it his message that you hate or his personality?
his personality, his methods and most importantly the spotty accuracy of his info. other than that he’s gold ;-)
Anti-gay laws?
Wow. Talk about living in the stone-age.
“Phelps and ALL Christians are not following God’s commands. According to the Bible, they are supposed to KILL homosexuals, not protest their funerals. Their God commands it! Nice flaming there. I’ll just point out that what you said is not even slightly true.
Also, just because some “Christians” “pick and choose which commands to follow”, what does that have to do with whether or not it’s a reasonable thing to be religious?
:)
Hmm… before my smiley there was a mock HTML-style tag that was supposed to imply that I was finished being pedantic, but the comments engine ate it. Whoops. The ending smiley is a bit of a misnomer without it.
A law against homosexuality but no law against adultery? It’s a commandment aswell. Why wouldn’t the politicians want that commandment as law I wonder.
The Awful Truth ran for two seasons, several years ago from 1999-2000… he has many other very good episodes (like the one where he has a guy visit a bank in switzerland dressed as hitler, saying “I’d like my jew money back now please”), and from wikipedia: An election special where a Ficus tree was run against the otherwise unopposed Republican incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen for a seat in Congress.
uhm BEN “Nice flaming there. I’ll just point out that what you said is not even slightly true.”
actaully, it is….
“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Leviticus 18:22
Hi Alcari,
That’s true. Now please show me the teacing in scripture where it says that people in 2006 should put homosexuals to death. You won’t find it, and that was the point I was making.
It doesn’t specifically say that people in 2006 should take anything in the bible seriously either.
Howdy YF,
I’d suggest that it does. One example (of many) would be Romans 1:16:
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…”
The bible is, essentially, the gospel (read “message of good news” – I hate wanton use of Christian buzzwords) of salvation from the just wrath of a righteous God, and which provides the only way for people to be reconciled to God. I think a fair paraphrase of that would be “people of 2006 – please take this message seriously.” Of course, you are free to ignore it or disbelieve it if you wish. I simply share this out of a sincere concern for fellow humanity.
I never understood how come USA has such laws. I mean, to my eyes, USA always stood as the model of a liberal society. Is there a reasonable explanation for this inconsistency?
Even in my own country, Brazil, which is more than 90% Catholic and not exactly liberal, any kind of discrimination is federal crime.
These laws aren’t enforced, the supreme court invalidated them in 2003, and before that it was rarely enforced, and only then in stupid states where it was still illegal (the south).
Also, at the time, in 2003, far fewer states than the ones on the chart still had the anti-sodomy laws on the books. I don’t know when this video was made, but it is either wrong or old.
I don’t really see how Michael Moore has really become associated with the radical left, I mean many people say that he is the flipside to Ann Coulter, but he’s never said anything remotely as offensive or just batshit crazy. I think there’s a telling scene in a documentary called Divided Nation or something to that effect where Moore at talk is empathetic with Republicans and conservatives for their beliefs and how he knows that fundamentally they are good, honest people.
There’s another scene where Sean Hannity visits the same town and is calling out for any liberals in the audience and then proceeds to lay down the most dishonest logical falacies at them (such as his favourite of if you didn’t support the war, you supported Saddam’s rape rooms).
I know that Moore uses his own share of dishonest argument, but there are very poignant scenes in ‘Bowling for Columbine’ that really do ask the questions of why America is such an internally and externally violent nation. I didn’t really like Fahrenheit 9/11 as much (though not because I disagreed with it), but there is a scene where over a montage of ‘shock and awe’ destruction of the bombing of Baghdad, Moore speaks how Iraq never did anything to directly provoke America and the question of porportionality is overt.
Despite what he does distort, it is these scenes like that better encapsulate what he seeks to convey.
@YF – don’t know if it was accurate at the time or not, but this clip is definitely old. The Matthew Shepard murder was in 1998.
sodomy laws were declared unconstitutional a few years back. Lawrence v Texas, maybe? (IANAL) Instead of sodomy being outlawed, it is now the Phelps’ preferred method of protest that is illegal. Irony: Delicious, Refreshing, and Only 2.9 Grams of Carbs!
Guys, it isnt just micheal moore whos evil, or george bush, its the whole lot of ya imperialist monkeys.
I’m a humanist, meaning I don’t adjust my life to suit the teaching of some crusty old farts written centuries ago, and that’s forever coming under interpretation.
People are people, religion is just another front for them to use to attack people, it doesn’t matter what you believe in, the hate and bile will still be there.
No matter how much you pray to a god, regardless of your faith, its always going to be about people, people cause human problems, and only people can fix them. Religion is just something for people to find a source in, a direction when there so messed up they have nowhere to turn to.
One thing that I will say, Christianity is the worst case of this in the western world, because rather then letting people get on with there lives, these same messed up people who use Christianity to the extreme are forever trying to convert people to their ideals. Its better to live a life knowing right from wrong, rather then following someone elses example.
These religious extremists showed up most resently at the funeral for the 4 dead children from the bus accident in huntsville alabama. There was absolutly no connection to homosexuality. They seem to blame everything wrong on gays. Theres an old christian saying “Its easy to to see the splinter in anothers eye, but not to see the plank in your own”. These people are obviously in denial…
Your father,
“only then in stupid states where it was still illegal (the south).”
It wasnt just the south, a good majority were western states. Its not the state it just the political nutjobs.;)
why is michael moore described as being extremely left wing? seriously.. he’s a liberal that doesnt make him left wing. You don’t need to be extreme left wing to criticise Bush and anti gays, just sane. Extreme left wingers are usually communists, michael moore is not.
Yup… Michael Moore = Liberal.
He is NOT on the “radical left,” nor even particularly close to it.
Please, as logical rationalists, let’s try to be accurate with our terminology, mkay?
Hey Ben, when Jesus says that not one iota of the law shall pass…etc. is he not saying that all of the bible still applies in 2006? If he is, then read Leviticus 20:13 for the injunction to kill homosexuals. Not surprising really when you think that god usually seems far more interested in death than life, what with demanding blood sacrifices cause he likes the smell of burning flesh or just the fits of pique that fall on him and lead him to slaughter people.
Michael Moore might be raging leftist, but mad props for pulling this off.
I wish that Islam, Christianity and Judaism would all die a quick death. The world would be a better place without the lot of them and would have been saved a lot of violent misery as well.
Adam,
There are no Athiests committe killing, stealing or rapeing. Athiests are angels of the world.
“There are no Athiests committe killing, stealing or rapeing. Athiests are angels of the world.”
Not as many as you may think, and if religion is wiped out, theres one less excuse for people to kill each other.
Not as many as you may think, how could you know.
Peopel will kill and steal and do mistakes no matter what, it’s life, there is devil, and as long as the devil exist, there will be bad things happen.
Beleive it, if the Athies become majority, and they are threaten by religion or any other minority group, they will kill and they will find the reason for it.
oy!
there is devil, and as long as the devil exist, there will be bad things happen
Actually, there is an inherent dominatory nature in our genes that we temper with our inclinations towards group altruism and kin-selection. Yes, bad things will still happen if religion is abolished, but no longer will people go unpunished for these actions because “they are part of their religion”.
Beleive it, if the Athies become majority, and they are threaten by religion or any other minority group, they will kill and they will find the reason for it.
If Atheism became the majority religious inclination in the world, then I seriously doubt that religion would ever pose a threat again.
This was from LAST CENTURY!
(1999-2000, that is)
So what was there before Judiasm and Christanity and Islam, they were Athiest.
wrong mohamed. before “Judiasm and Christanity and Islam” there were many different religions and very FEW (if ANY) people were athEist. with increasing knowledge, the need for supernatural myths to explain the nature around us decreased, thus making atheism possible.
Anonynous,
Your theories about the evolution and the Carbon accidents doesn’t convince a childto where we came from.
As I said before, for you thories to happen, you need billions of dizzilons of accidents to happen, which amazingly enough these accidents don’t happen any more to the human being.
“Your theories about the evolution and the Carbon accidents doesn’t convince a childto where we came from.”
Well, most people who don’t believe in evolution don’t actually understand it. I suppose that goes for some children as well. Everything you’ve stated regarding evolution leads me to believe that you know absolutely nothing about it.
…Of course, there are children who do get it, so where does that put you?
“you need billions of dizzilons”
over billions of years, billions of organisms producing billions of mutations makes perfect sense.
“which amazingly enough these accidents don’t happen any more to the human being”
WRONG, Our genes still mutate, and the same goes for all the genes of every living thing on the planet. The odds of these mutations being helpful to our survival are EXTREMELY slim (especially today).
So, should we expect to find spider turn to be hunman being after dizllion years from now, might be.
I understand evolution, but evolution can’t be basic theory for where human-being came from.
Evolution is good theory and it’s just a tool god gives to all the creatures on the earth to find way to live.
“should we expect to find spider turn to be hunman being after dizllion years from now”
No, of course not. This is just another example which makes clear that you have little understanding of Darwinian evolution.
As to your “example” of the spider:
If we take any species of modern spider, and then fast-forward 100 million generations, there is a fair chance that we’ll wind up with something that looks very different… or a number a different, related things which may look similar to each other, or not.
Of course, the most likely outcome is that 100 million generations of any given species will simply NOT OCCUR. Over 99% of all species that have ever existed have ended in terminal extinction.
More later.
What makes me angry about all those protesters… If they were true Christians they’d know that God loves EVERYBODY, regardless. And I highly doubt that those people holding those pickets aren’t full of sin. They have no room to talk. They have no room to judge. It is not man’s place to judge, but God’s Himself. If we want to be true Christians, we will strive to love.
“So what was there before Judiasm and Christanity and Islam, they were Athiest”
“wrong mohamed. before “Judiasm and Christanity and Islam†there were many different religions and very FEW (if ANY) people were athEist.”
I think Mohamed is referring to arabian tribes that ridiculed the self-proclaimed prophet and the many strict rules he imposed on his followers. They were not atheists – just relaxed, sensible religious people.
