Anthony, thank you for your post and the encouraging witness that you provide that other parts of the world are leaving religious enthrallment behind. You even provide a glimmer of hope that the Trinity Church followers will eventually do likewise, and I hope you are right.

Often in the US, as you are clearly aware, it is discouraging for us to see news of people still stuck in Christian dogma and other religious myths, to an extreme degree (particularly in the southern US, but not just there). Your post, and the popularity here of recent books by Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Christopher Hitchens, and others on the same vein of debunking religious idiocy (as this present website does), give one hope that as the US matures as a society, the superstitions of the past will lose their sway over people.

Having read an article in The Times newspaper here in the UK, I feel compelled to write something here. The debate has been amusing to say the least. Perhaps if we had sent the Pastors and Revs from Ireland and the US involved in many proven child molestation cases to these places, then they wouldn't have committed these crimes? Here in UK and Europe we seem to be moving on from the Victorian times with regards to religion. We find it both interesting and at the same time frightening when we see such things on the TV or in the newspaper. How can such people who are supposed to love thy neighbour (except if they are gay, had an abortion, taken drugs etc etc...the list gets longer) apply such hatred to certain groups of people? To say that because a girl isn't in the church would mean her getting raped is plain stupid. I bet a raped girl in the Trinity Church would have to keep a baby? I couldn't think of anything worse for the victim to have a constant reminder of a day that should be forgot. It isn't right that to further your cause, that you should attack certain groups of people in order to attract new recruits. A problem in the US is religion is everywhere and used by those in power as a way to present themselves better to voters. We have become very secular here, yes religion is there but in a much weaker and measured way.
As a gay man who has been in a relationship for over 10yrs which is coincidentally legally recognised here in the UK as we have Civil Partnerships, there isn't a choice of am I or aren't I? Its in my genes, its in my make up and was there long before any external factors. More often than not , the question many gay people have around the world is, can I be truthful and honest to those we love by telling them or are issues with regards to where you live going to mean a life of lies? Abortion isn't an issue even on voters minds here, neither is sexuality, it is now normal to have gay people on mainstream politics, TV and the likes, it doesn't even register! Again, in the US misinformation is a real problem, news channels are bias and to try and get an even debate is hard find. An age old question is how old is the earth? Many choose to disagree with the fact and proof of fossils found from millions of years ago and say it is much less. Creationism, thankfully does not have a foothold here and is certainly not taught in schools.
I respect religion and the comfort that it brings to some, but thats where it should end. People have the right to choose their lives for themselves, as people like Trinity Church and others have to right to practice their chosen religion. They have no place in politics or dictating to people on how lives should be lead. By leaving people like this to show their true colours and spurting hate as they do and to not react all the time will side line them and they will fade away. Your country is young, don't worry in years to come the day of what the vicar says is 100% true and un-questionable will seem like something from another era, an era before true enlightenment.

Without religion to provide people with false hope and lies we would be left with a large number of people to search for the true answers in life.

MarcDLS, i disagree with you and if you take out religion what would you have, chaos. can you explain to me what faith is when religion is not in it? faith is in everyone but it is where you put that faith in. you say, "a sense of control over the event. It is not the dark that people fear, but what might be lurking in it. Religion is a conglomeration of such imaginative explanations."
Like Korgan's catch phares and what Krista say's "THEMSELVES" you have the heart of your "imaginative explanations". the faith i would like to share is not in you but is from God, from above and from the cross and in the blood. How many faith's are there in this world and I say there is many but when you "put your faith in the ONE" Jesus will show you what it means to truly have faith. If we all don't have faith we are all ignorant. i agree with korgan "Religion is a disease of the mind. Inoculate against it with reason." I say, have a relationship on the "The One" who loves you.
The shooting today at Fort Hood is a good example when faith in based in what you say is lurking in the dark.

To go into greater detail, or to spell the point out for you, the human mind hates a vacuum. In the absence of an answer, or knowledge, people will create an answer simply to attempt to give a meaning to the event and, transitively, a sense of control over the event. It is not the dark that people fear, but what might be lurking in it. Religion is a conglomeration of such imaginative explanations. To take my previous statement backwards one step: religion is based in faith, and faith is based in ignorance. Therefore, religion is based in ignorance. It's not meant as an insult to say this, merely stating the obvious. Furthermore, one who is ignorant can always learn, though one must wish to first.

WrecklessTX, regarding valid responses, so far all your post content has been full of standard, well known fallacies. This has been pointed out to you very specifically, and you have been unable to respond with any substance. So it is demonstrated that it is you who has evaded debate. MarcDLS's post has another specific about the flaws in your posts thus far.

Now, your latest post contains yet another fallacy. You include the common Christian threat of a "judgement day." That is in essence the fallacy known as Pascal's Wager, betting on the existence of god. Do some googling to understand why that is a failed argument for your god. You need to do a better job of preparing yourself for debate, before you post yet more silly Christian drivel here; so far, you have simply been out of your depth.

Yes, Resort to insults to evade a good point. I thought you were a student of debate, not an answer dodger. Its ok though, because you can continue to avoid valid responses and keep your heart hardened if you desire, Jesus STILL loves you and I pray that you will have changed before the day of judgement.
