Let’s hope that religious freaks are correct and evolution doesn’t exist. I say this because of the potential horrors that await us. The BBC has more on this bizarre prediction.
Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics predicts that within 100,000 years humans will have evolved in to two classes. The first class is the upper class, a collection of tall, slim, healthy, attractive, creative, and intelligent people. The other class is not so fortunate. These are the underclass people who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures. Yikes!
You can already see these classes of people forming. Just head down to your local state fair next year and you’ll see what I mean. But seriously, think about this for a second. Dumb people attract dumb people and smart people attract smart people. The same goes for looks. Basically look at the suburbs, the inner-city, and trailer parks.
In the inner-city and trailer parks you have more uneducated ugly people; that’s why they’re there in the first place. If there were any good looking or intelligent ones, they got out a long time ago. Now these people left behind will often times marry someone else of the same caliber. The cycle continues indefinitely until you reach a race of morons.
Now in the suburbs, just the opposite takes place. Instead of ignorant people you have rather educated individuals. Keep breading intelligent kids and you get the picture.
I see this prediction already coming true everyday. What I found equally interesting is his prediction on how our dependency on technology will dumb us down. That is already happening for sure, but I’ll leave that up to you guys to give examples :)

Odd, I could have sword I already met some of these sub-humans from my college years while working at Wal-Mart. “Trailer Trash” I believe we called them, and while they may have been lackluster in intelligence they more than made up for it with nastiness and sheer angst.
Ironically, most of these sub-humans were Bible-bashers if I remember correctly… The correlation basically speaks for itself. (Sorry, must be the jadedness speaking.)

This is a blatent rip straight from The Time Machine by Wells… It’s so blatent as to make it pathetic.
It was also posted on slashdot, and there is a much more powerful and critical examination of the reasons this is bullshit there than I’ll ever be able to produce… But to bring in a few points;
1) Rich = beautiful in the day and age of plastic surgury, and rich != always rich as the poor have more reason to try hard to advance (if you’ve got everything handed to you, you tend to lose it rather quickly). So there is always new ‘blood’ entering the upper classes.
2) Human crossing boundries (especially class based ones) is so common that it’s almsot a regular occurance in the developed world, this crosses the boundries enough to intermix the ‘two species’ and keep them together
I could go on, but to be honest, I’d feel like I was wasting my time refuting such obvious crap.

As for the rich, we’re not talking about the uber wealthy elite because they represent a very small portion of the population. We’re talking about the middle to upper middle class in my opinion. Is there new blood entering it from poorer cultures? Sure, but its a small percentage.
How many educated wealthy people do you see hooking up with broke ass uneducated people? Not too many I’d bet.
So there is a trend that is happening right now. There is a division of classes and those are growing more and more apart. If I’m insane please explain how.
The author isn’t saying that this will happen overnight.

Crossbreeding, even infrequent crossbreeding, tends to confound a speciation event. You need to have isolation to have a speciation event.
This guy is not quoting The Time Machine, the article is. This futurist is saying the same thing that every distopianist has been saying for centuries… not to say that he’s neccessarily wrong, but…
Plain fact is that education is becoming more and more accessable as time goes by. There may be a division of ‘breeders’ based on intelligence, but that won’t bring about the changes that he’s talking about (we’ve all run into the genius that is 300 lbs). The division he’s talking about is ‘beautiful, rich people’ vs ‘ugly poor people’ and really, that’s not what’s happening at all. It’s more an ‘educated’ vs ‘uneducated’ question, which is a whole different ball game.
And finally, it’s a moot question. A trend has to be in place for millenia for it to have any gradual effect. When in the history of humanity has ANYTHING been that stable when it came to culture? Yeah, we might even be on that road right now, but in 1000 years? I doubt it.

For it to even BE a sound theory, it has to have ‘real’ evidence.
And no, your trailer-trash doesn’t count, intelligence (as socially understood) is much more a consequence of education than that of genetics.
Of course, nothing tells us that this could not happen, but more so that it would be a social division, not only a genetic one.
(tho it could be argued that a social division would create the environmental and genetic isolation required for differientiation to occur…)
I’m gonna have to call bullshit on this one too. Not that it isn’t plausible… I mean, why not? but there are so many x factors that aren’t being taken into account here. Just think of what humanity will do it itself within 100,000 years. What if humans begin designing humans to be better in their eyes? I don’t think this type of genetic manipulation would be too far off. Also, If our technology advances to the point where human labor is no longer needed, then there wouldn’t be classes, we would all be what we consider upper-class. This is just to name a few. I seriously doubt this type of branching will actually happen, and even if it does, it will likely be in a manner we never imagined.
hehehe, if it ever happenned, I’m sure the elite would only exterminate the lessers anyway…

unlike what the article may insinuate, Evolution theory is NOT his field of study, it’s a hobby, it’s NOT something that he an authority on or anything….
Two holes in this theory, Gas:
First off, the tendency of “alphas” to cherrypick from the “beta” gene pool. Think Anna Nicole Smith, for example, or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sports, popular music & movies are all also entrypoints for the “beta” genes.
Second, the fact that within years, if not months, the Raelians will have perfected human cloning and we’ll all look like either Brad Pitt or Pamela Anderson.

gasmonso, I’m really having a hard time believing that this article of yours isn’t mostly sarcastic, that you only said the things you said in order to get us riled up and discussing things. Please tell me the only reason I’m worried that you were being serious is that it’s early yet and my sarcasm-o-meter hasn’t fully warmed up.
Mostly sarcastic UncleM, but it does spark curiosity. I can image we’re very different from those that existed 100,000 years ago. While I doubt we will have trolls and good looking giants running around, it does make one wonder what humans will look and act like in thousands of years.
The one part of the article I do agree with is the dumbing down of society due to technology. You need to understand less because technology does more. Sure we know how to operate computers, tv, dvd players, etc… but most people don’t have a clue as to how they work. They just know how to push the buttons. Chimps can be trained to do the same.

This theory shows a distinct misunderstanding of evolution. Evolution is not some continual process. In fact it isn’t a ‘process’ at all.
That’s the problem with human thought it puts purpose in front of events (this happens so that this will happen…) In reality events happen because of events of the past. Until you really understand evolution with that you’ve got no idea what’s going on.
What for a definition of “process” are you using? Usually, it means something like “change over time” – and evolution is exactly that. The definition does not include some entity directing the process.

Hrm, Sorry, I guess I wasn’t being precise. I suppose I mean some sort of foward-thinking process. So there is no “desired” outcome in evolution. There is no “perfectly” evolved entity. Species evolve to match their environment, not because there is some active process to match some given environment but simply because the ones that didn’t arbitrarily gain adaptive mutations died out.
I think that even if it did have any viability, Outsider’s point on the requirement of a continued stability in our culture rips it apart. He’s right…when was the last time the lower class remained the lower class for 100,000 years?

Its always funny when fundies throw around the phrase “fairy tales” in relation to anything scientific or outside their realm of understanding. What about people who believe in a different god? are they below you for some reason?
I don’t think that is going to happen. It’s plausiable, but highly unlikley, as people do cross the boundaries in western life all the time. Mabey in a very segregated place, but I don’t see the coralation between being poor and ugly. It also reminds me a bit of brave new world.
