In a stunning display of stupidity, Australia’s most senior Muslim cleric has managed to trump the Pope’s previous words of wisdom. During a sermon this Ramadan, Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilali addressed 500 worshippers to share his wisdom on women and the hijab.
The beauty and eloquence of his words brought a tear to my eye and warmth to my heart. Sheikh Hilali began by claiming that women who did not wear a hijab (head dress) were like "uncovered meat". He continued:
If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside… and the cats come and eat it… whose fault is it, the cats’ or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem.
Read the article to get the whole story and see the rest of his charming quotes. Basically what he is saying is that women are inviting an assault if they don’t wear a hijab and dress conservatively. So do Muslim men not lack the ability to exercise restraint and therefor require their women to cover-up? I find his words very telling, as if he himself thinks about women in a dehumanizing manner.
What I find amusing is that once this story broke, Sheikh Hilali claimed that the words were not his and they were taken out of context. Hmmmm, reminds me of a certain Pope using the words of Emperor Manual II Paleologos. While theses two stories are somewhat similar, I can’t wait to see how the responses will differ.

If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside… and the cats come and eat it… whose fault is it, the cats’ or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem.
By this example isn’t both the faults of the people who didn’t discipline their cats not to jump up on the counter and steal food and the person that didn’t think well enough about their meat to keep it safe? Blaming the poor meat like that, what could it do?
Wait… did I just make a sarcastic stab at the metaphor that actually seriously commented on the subject within the scope of the metaphor?
Time to riot!
maybe there is something to it. mohamed claims that without religion, there would be no law and everyone would do whatever they please. muslims already act like savages for the most part. can’t even imagine how they’d be WITHOUT religion.
Shoot some Imams and burn down some Mosques? Oh, and refuse to accept his apology.
Dave
So let me get this analogy straight… The fault lies with the piece of meat, which therefore deserves to be eaten? I think Taj-baby needs to work on his use of metaphor and get a grip on reality. I suspect his turban is there to lessen the impact of the sledgehammers that folk want to use on his vacuous head. I know clerics talk crap, but this is an example of crap at its finest – a veritable filet de crap, so to speak.
That’s right, Russel…the meat is the problem. I mean, just imagine it…meat, sitting there…all…meaty, and, uh, meatful…just…meating itself all over the place…how could you not blame it for being what it is? It should be what we want it to be!
I also like the other quote mentioned in the article: “If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred…” Going along with that, if the man’s goods stayed in his pants, within range of his impulses, there would be no problem either. I say we never let people leave their homes ever, so as to prevent crime. And to prevent domestic abuse, never let them move or talk to other human beings. Ever.
Its just kinda unexcusably backwards to sit there and say that if a woman is assaulted, you can’t blame the assaulter. Obviously this man was just an innocent bystander to this harlots seduction. If only she hadn’t been dressed like that, he wouldn’t have had to rape her. I mean, look at what she was wearing, how could he have known? When a woman screams for you to stop and begs for you to leave her alone, who can really truely understand what she means by that?
This guy obviously has never met a woman, or the women he has met are in serious need of intervention by Amnesty International.
A similar event happened in Denmark last year, I think, when a muslim cleric said that ANY woman with no head dress is to blame if she gets raped. That was on PUBLIC TELEVISION. Feminist groups sued him right away.
The fallout from this event is all over the news here at the moment. Just about every Muslim organisation has released statements condemning the remarks. The mufti in question has agreed to step aside for a few months while his future is reconsidered. In addition, his position is up for election soon.
The moral of the story is: Everyone thinks the remarks were stupid.
I don’t know about this eating women thing, but I know if I saw an uncovered piece of meat I’d have sex with it. As Jesus said, long has it been since I was nailed.
“Top muslim cleric”, eh? Not for long, certainly. He’s actually the mufti for Autralia and NZ, an unofficial position, basically the religious advisor for the government to keep sure that it’s following sharia law and act as the respresentative of the religious community. Usually the mufti is simply the most respected Islamic scholar in their country, unanimously recognized within the community. Not every muslim state has one, and certainly most non-muslim states don’t have one. It’s curious as to why Australia should have one at all.
It’s still unclear as to whether he’s actually been recognized in this position or if he basically appointed himself. At any rate he won’t be mufti for long, given the ire he’s drawn over his comments.
*sigh*

What kind of meat was it??
Should we just automatically allow the “meat off the hook” without knowing just a wee bit more about it?
Let me remind all of you meat loving automatons that when Hitler was nearly killed in July of 1944 HE ORDERED ALL THE CONSPIRATORS HUNG BY MEAT HOOKS!!!
Now , I am not absolutely certain that they were so hung after being shot or before BUT…
For the purposes of this discussion the point is still “Just what kind of meat was the cleric condemning?’
Finally when one of the most respected Wermacht generals (his name might have been Von Leeb ,I’m not certain here, was brought before this maniacal Nazi judge, whose name I believe was Kreisler, this general was not given a belt to hold up his pants which kept dropping every time he raised his hand to try and make a point. This was designed to further humiliate this man and all who failed to follow the Hitler “prinzip”
@oldfan43 WTF does that have to do with anything?
Boris,
What do you mean?
i mean totally off topic
Boris,
I don’t mean to be contentious ,BUT……Meat is mentioned by actual count eighteen times in the context of the Imam’s message. Why isn’t it appropriate to discuss a different aspect of meat : the purpose being to attempt to understand a perspective on a seemingly familiar subject from a viewpoint foreign to most Americans experience?
As a matter of historical accuracy (see “The Fritz Kreisler I Knew”, H. Frank :Deutsche Press) my point is incontestable. There can be absolutely no question of the use of meat hooks in this context nor can there be much conjecture concerning differences of attitudes between the Muslem world (as represented by the comments of this IMam and the attitude of Western cultures toward meat.
I would be very interested in your response to this point in particular! I feel myself to be an objective person , open to differing points of view.
I remain your friend and respect your right to disagree with me as I trust you will equally respect my rights.
OK here is the gist of it as far as I can see.
I feel he is saying go ahead, you see a non islamic woman go ahead and rape her, it is her fault, you have every right to, what does she expect going out like that letting you see her hair and arms, that is what she deserves.
I think he is an evil man inciting hatred and violence against women and to be honest it makes me sick sick sick.
Regards,
Australian woman that wears whatever she wants.
Far be it from me to defend the “mufti”, but oldfan43 has a point. I suspect that we might be up against some lack of context and cultural differences.
Referring to women as “meat”, in the west, is highly offensive. I suspect that in Lebanese culture, it doesn’t have the same offensive connotations. (Interestingly, in American Yiddish, the term “schiksa” may have originated as a play on words; one theory of its origin is that it refers to the meat of a ritually unclean animal.)
Those who were at the sermon in question seem to all agree that the remarks made sense in context, speaking as he was about life as a Muslim woman. I do believe him when he said that the papers completely missed the point that he was trying to make, and he did not intend to excuse sexual assault. This is much like the Pope didn’t intend to denigrate Islam.
Now having said that, I’d be more charitable if Al-Hilali hadn’t said this sort of thing before on multiple occasions. I don’t think he’s a sick and evil man (at worst, I think he’s highly insensitive and out-of-touch), but I do think that a person who can’t express himself properly has no business in a public leadership position.
And having said THAT, there’s one thing in his sermon which I did find quite sick, even when you account for cultural differences.
That “65 years” refers to the original sentence handed to Bilal Skaf (which was actually 55 years). Skaf didn’t indulge in mere adultery, he was the ringleader of a series of quite brutal gang rapes. The comparison goes beyond offensive.
Cheers,
Australian man who agrees that Amy should wear whatever she wants without fear.

What scares me as a woman and the aunt to a very beautiful niece is the sheer number of men who believe this very such thing. I am personally from the camp that doesn’t given a crap if a girl is walking down the street naked. If she’s calmly walking down the street NOT asking you for sex, then that doesn’t give you the right to jump her.
*give a crap
sorry, the given part is throwing myself off as I reread my response
hu the hell do u think u r? sum god that u can go offended and makin comments abt others religion? wat the sheik sed was totally rite. u’d neva find a lady that is dressed modestly wering the hijab is getting raped so think logically hu evr made this website!
