Hey everyone! Sorry about the lack of updates, but I’ve been crazy busy. Here’s what’s been going on:
I’ve been testing out several forum packages. I am trying to find a balance of simplicity and effectiveness. So far things are coming along well and I’ll be inviting a few of you to test them out soon.
Also, I’ve been busy trying to code a mechanism allowing me to post links that people submit, but don’t have time to write about. Hopefully this will keep things fresh by allowing more news to get out while still allowing for discussions. More on this as I get futher.
On the family front, I’ve been busy with the holidays and all the crap that goes along with that. I hope everyone here is doing well and finished their Christmas shopping ;)
Feel free to discuss whatever you’d like to in this thread!
Regards,
gasmonso

I got my Festivus pole picked out… Aluminum, prized for its low weight to stability ratio!

Atheists celebrate Christmas, because jesus wasn’t born in Winter. Also, it was originally a pagan holiday.
I got my dad a bunch of adam’s peanut butter. and my mom a wine rack.
Yup.
Seriously, my dad loves natural peanut butter.

“Feel free to discuss whatever you’d like to in this thread!”
Well let me suggest a topic for today, what about a short introduction of whom we all are?
I’ll start so we can get this thread rolling.
Im a 30 year old Norwegian male with two kids and a wife.
In my professional life I’m a R&D engineer within Sub Sea control systems and chemical injection systems.
My online life is mostly uninteresting for other people than myself, but whenever I get bored you can usually find me either at Slashdot.org or at this site. A few months ago you would also find me within the world of Azeroth, but to save my marriage I had to end my adventuring ;)
I don’t like to label myself, but if I had to claim a label which described my set of believes it would be something like a: Atheist with an ill defined humanistic tendency.
That was me; ill go get some cookies now which I’ll distribute among the people who are willing to contribute.

I’ve been using the Simple Machines forum software for at least a year, and it’s been the best one so far. Give it a gander.

My name is Tyson Wyatt.
I am a 21 year old college student specializing in Infromation Technology/Computer Sciences. I work part time at a grocery store and I still live with my parents, though I do pay my own ends as my mom has no one else to turn to for help.
My philsophies are rooted in Transhumanism. I openly reject “god’s creation”. From there I will let you figure out. I am a nihilist publically, but interpersonally I wish to make the world a better place by pointing out the flaws we see in our everyday lives.
I started becoming a atheist at the age of 11-12 when I saw no reason to go to sunday school. I didn’t take the bible “as is” and I had enough with “god’s children” and how they would become one of my enemies.
Some would say I’m more of a nihilist, maybe it’s my antisocial behavior. I’m a former steroid user. I drink heavily. I love to argue. I love to make those around me feel intellectually weak when they believe in creationism. It’s too easy, though they seem to think that my words are some sort of test of their faith.
Anyway that’s my story. I’m pretty filled with hate.

Revlic, remember God loves you, let him fill your heart with joy and happy, happy thoughts^^
Hehe, here is your cookie

How about you drill a hole in your head and let the sap leak out?
^^
December 21st, 2006 at 7:37 am
Can I have my cookie back?
December 21st, 2006 at 7:46 am
Hahaha
December 21st, 2006 at 8:28 am
Revlic, you sound like a younger me… I went through the whole hatred phase back when I was 18. Once you realize that no matter what you say, they will look at you as being a tool of god to test them or a tool of satan to tempt them, you just start to internalize the pity.
Its no longer fun to make them look stupid, since they revel in their ignorance as somehow being a desirable quality.

kk, got my cookie back now, it looks like someone have stabbed it repeatedly with a sharp object, but I guess it still tastes ok. So anyone want to introduce themselves to get their hands on a physically abused cookie?

Ok, New One. I’m game.
I just recently turned 30 and bought my first house (on the same day!). I’ve been married for four years, no kids. I grew up in OH and have a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics form the University of Akron. I have been working as a Quantitative Financial Analyst in commercial credit risk for over two years. My hobbies include reading, philosophy, hiking, and games.
I’ve talked about my religious / belief history elsewhere, but I’ll briefly reiterate it here. I was raised a Baptist (souther style), but began seeing problems with that belief system at about age 17. My beliefs slowly improved until I finally fully rejected Christianity at about 20, when I found philosophy. Years of philosophical study lead me to Deism, though I didn’t know it was called Deism until this year.
December 21st, 2006 at 9:35 am
Good Idea, Newone.
I’m 35 years old, gay, male, songwriter, student, homeowner, puppy owner (her name’s Minerva, she’s a 13 week old Dutch Shepherd),recovering drug addict, identical twin, Buffalo Sabres fan, and happily coupled (3 years this April).
My immediate goal is to get better at thinking before I speak.
I look foreward to many spirited discussions here!
December 21st, 2006 at 10:18 am
I turned 24 this 10th of December (Human rights day by the way). Bachelors in Computer Science from the University of West Georgia. I have held a job as a technical consultant since February.
I have a girlfriend who is Agnostic (maybe, we can’t be sure if she is or not, the question is unknowable). I’m a recovering Deist currently working out my possible delusions of Gods existance. Former Catholic. Cat owner.
Next?

Alright, I’ll bite.
19, male, live in the middle of nowhere Michigan in a town of about 150 except for when I get to go off to Northern Michigan University. I study political science and philosophy, and unlike most of my perpetually drunken peers I take undergrad study seriously. I spend my free time either reading books on Western thought, browsing this site, or aimlessly playing the evil videogames. Don’t work right now (I think ‘full-time student’ is the nice way to say it), but I’m hoping to get me a job in a book store, where my head would probably explode from the potential.
I think I was technically born Lutheran and that I was baptised, although I have no idea because my parents are about as religious as a lawn chair (one that professes Atheism, mind you). The rest I’ve described elsewhere.
I’m hoping to eventually come out of higher ed with a Ph.D in applied ethics or the like and ultimately to find agreeable solutions to those questions of values and meaning in a world that might just have to face existence without a God to lead the way.
Happy Pagan Tree Holiday!
December 21st, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Wow, Snurp, if you do find a career that works towards finding agreeable solutions to questions and values, let me know. I’ll gladly switch.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:03 pm
Well shit, happy Winter Pagan Season all!
I am your proverbial Canuck from the igloo nation of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. 25 years young, I work full time as a Developer/QA for a CRM/CMS software company. (And various other contracts in my spare time) I strongly believe, and donate a lot of my time to Open Source and other Socialist projects.
I’ve been playing percussion for about 15 years in various bands; (Jazz, Punk and Ska) as well as just having fun with different projects. The place where I live has 5 world class mountains 20 minutes away, so consequently I love every board sport known to man. (Especially surfing)
More than all that shit, I “love” Marijuana; and have been an avid stoner since I was 8 or so. It really was the thing that opened my eyes to the world; it calmed me down and I stopped trying to fit in. After that, Taoist teachings and meditation seemed a really good match for my ideology. The “relativeness” of all things helped show me the need for compassion; but also fueled my hatred of those religions who look to conform or oppress others. Jah Live.
I believe in humanity as a whole, and think Science is our only salvation from our “learning curve”. I just picked up “The Theory of the Universe and Everything” by Sir Roger Penrose, and cannot recommend it enough.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:20 pm
I’m a 24 year old French Canadian from Montreal. I’m a computer technician for a telemarketing company.
I’m an atheist and always was one. I’m not baptised.
I like to ski, paintball and enjoying SHMUPs.
I’m studying japanese at university and some IT stuff from books.
I too smoke marijuana regularily, it helps to forget things. I like Douglas Adams.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:59 pm
uhhhhh…
21 year old atheist. Just (a week or so ago) graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts) with a bs in cs. I work as a software developer (like everyone else here apparently) for a start up working on a web application.
I’ve been an atheist since I was like 10. Used to smoke a lot of weed, but rarely do anymore.
Happy jesus-bastardized pagan gift giving ritual.

I am 25 years old. Ukrainian - Jewish immigrant, citizen of USA, located in Cincinnati, OHIO. I am married to polish catholic blond, ;P and have a beagle, named Atos. I’ve bought the house this year.
Work: Programmer/Analyst.
Religion: EgoTheist - Ossumptionist - Agnostic, “I think, therefore I Are.”
Because of the last few post, have an urge to visit Canada.
Have bunch of friend of different cultures and religions, all this makes them somewhat insecure.
Happy off, and gifts giving and taking days!
December 21st, 2006 at 2:12 pm
I’m thirty-five. I do IT support for a living and write because it keeps me sane. I’m a father of three and have been married for eleven years. I’ve been a Christian for seventeen years, specifically Presbyterian for the last five. Never smoked weed. Love dark beer and coffee and as such am a home brewer and roast my own beans. I love me some Jesus and I love all you kooky atheists!

hello
December 21st, 2006 at 3:29 pm
I’m 31, married with one son. I live in warm and sunny Detroit, Michigan, USA.(Well a burb, but hey
).
I am a Database Admin by trade.
I have a great and powerful faith that I have not a clue what is going on so I am a strong agnostic about deism. I am not a “theist” though.
I.E. I do not believe in personal gods(except you can personally believe whatever you want), but a creator god, maybe……
Boy, I hope that made sense.
Later all Y’all!
December 21st, 2006 at 3:55 pm
OK, I’ll go along… (oooh look, everyone’s queueing up, so we ought to, as well)
Male, 37, with a couple of educational degrees, now working as a freelance photographer in northern California. Love computers and would probably make more $ if I worked in that field, like most of you.
Drummer/percussionist for appx 25 years.
Raised on critical thought, questioning authority, and scientific curiosity by parents who had already rejected the supernatural flim-flam of their upbringings. As such, it’s not too surprising that I spent my high-school years laughing at the Bible and arguing with the silly born-again xtians. (Waste of time unless there’s a thinking audience.)
Hope you’re enjoying this solstice day. It’s actually no darker than any other day of the year, but in the northern hemisphere it stays dark a little longer ;-P
Peace.

I play bass guitar.
I weild a Bronze Edition Warlock 4 string. RC Rich ftw.
December 21st, 2006 at 4:26 pm
sidfaiwu, you’ll be the first to know. Besides, I’m not much for the programming/computer information services field, which seems to leave me in the minority here…..

Happy winter-een-mas everybody,
I’m a 20 years old university student at the Technion, Israel. Studying computer engineering and programming.
Born in Germany by a moslem father and a former christian mother who converted to islam. We moved to Israel(my father’s homeland) when i was 7 years old
Started my way to atheism at the age of 15 I think when some Moslem told me that the Quran says that Evolution is wrong(”What?! but look at the evidence….” “no my child god created adam and eve…”)
Philsophies: Ain’t it harm none, do as thou will.

What the hell, we are all a bunch of computer specialists or something?
Not one priest? ;-)
December 22nd, 2006 at 4:40 pm
Well that explains why the Firefox usage is well over 50% on this site ;) We’re a bunch of f*cking nerds!!! LOL

December 22nd, 2006 at 6:25 pm
Yeah, well. So?
Technically we run this planet.
December 23rd, 2006 at 1:02 am
wth? =)
31 year old, married for three years, together for 7 total. No pets, no kids. Don’t know when the latter is going to happen.
Wife has a B.A. in English and Writing, I have a B.S. in Information Tech. We both work, she’s p/t, I’m f/t in the IT dept of a junior college. I’m sort of a jack of all trades tech. I do hardware, I do software, I do some scripting, I work on networks, I do Helpdesk, I assist the admins, I manage a Mac lab (shudder), etc, etc…
Wife is mostly agnostic, I’m mostly neopagan. It makes for an interesting mix. I really am in the process at the moment of learning more about other relgions (than Christianity), but also keeping in check with the scientific aspect of our existence.
Philosphy: Threat others as you would like to be threated.
December 23rd, 2006 at 2:08 am
My philosophy is sorta like yours.
“Treat others how they treat you then make them suffer for it.”
December 26th, 2006 at 11:00 am
Yep, we are a bunch of geeks for sure. I am a 34 year old PC service tech/network tech/etc. I am a sci-fi nut, I watch it, I read it, and have since I was a wee one. I am, of course, an Atheist. I also use Firefox. I can’t understand how anyone can use IE, but then I also can’t understand how anyone can believe in god so there you go.
Speaking of forums, Gasmonso are you thinking about tying the news section discussion into the forum? Like they do on Ars.
December 26th, 2006 at 11:45 am
You mean that Bill Gates isn’t God?!? And all this time I thought I was going to Hell for using Firefox.
December 26th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Today, pause to reflect on the life of The Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
December 26th, 2006 at 2:40 pm
If there is a soul that can be proven, it is the kind that this man brought into existance. And this soul is of a substance that can be tested and confirmed, that substance is funkyness.
