The reason for the attack was to protest against the infamous Muhammed Caricatures that I have shown for almost a year now. I will provide more information, but I am tired and want some sleep :) I would like to thank everyone that helped me out and encouraged me. I was overwhelmed by the support from all you guys! I won't mention names for your own safety, but you know who you are.
As for the hackers that attempted to silence this venue of free speech, I am honored that my site was graced with your presence. As a token of my gratitude, I have taken your logo and made a few modifications of my own. You have my permission to use it in your future hacking endevours on this site and any other one you wish to violate in the name of your prophet.

I’m going to have to call your bluff on this one. There is ample art by Muslims, especially early Muslims, that depict Muhammad in full. There is even a building in Modern Day Iran that has a mural with Muhammad and it has not been torn down or protested against.

Does it not seem more likely that they were upset with the way Muhammad was pictured? And why did they explode over a Danish newspaper, when similar or worse depictions had happened in other newspapers for years? Why were they not upset about the “Super Best Friends” episode of South Park, which reached far more people than the Danish Paper, but aired in 2001?

The answer: in 2001 there was a little less tension between the Middle East and the West. The Danish cartoons were just another inconsistent excuse for violent protest.
On a side note, the reason early Muslims depicted Muhammad in art is that the Qur’an does not forbid it. The Qur’an only forbids idolatry. Aniconism (the prohibition of drawing living things) did not become common Islamic practice until the 9th century, when leaders of that time thought that banning such depictions would be helpful in preventing idolatry.

A shining example of the one-sided thinking religion invokes. Here we have an individual claiming no responsibility for actions done in the name of religion. Predicated upon that, this individual is unable to comprehend that their own actions are unethical, yet willing and eager to deliver penalties to others who respond in turn to their bad behavior. It is a remarkably twisted world that believers live in. They are willing to suspend all moral and ethical behavior for things that are unproved while simultaneously claiming to be the vanguard of morality and ethics. Mohamed, I seriously doubt that the Middle East will arrive at peace easily if the US and Israel were to disappear. I may not live there or anything, but from what I see it looks like there is little short of a civil war in much of it, with Iraq as the epicenter. I see a Shi’ite Iran trying to gain dominant influence in a Shi’ite majority Iraq, with Jordan and other Sunni countries getting ready to make moves of their own. If the US just leaves and tells them to “work it out”, I can’t imagine anything short of war. You will probably say that the US is the cause; I say that their arrival certainly didn’t help, but it’s gone beyond their control. If the place melts into chaos, oil prices will likely skyrocket due to difficulty in getting supply, and that would not help us at all. So we want peace as much as anyone else at this point, if anything just so we can get the hell out and make things the way they used to be.
The only reason the Arab world was docile before the European powers was because they were already the lower class citizens of the Euro-Anatolian Ottoman Empire. Ironically, they did not enjoy self-rule for 400 years until AFTER the European powers intervened.
The Arab world was not a peaceful land of unicorns and rainbows before the modern European nation states.
Up front, allow me to say that I do not intend to single-out Islam. It is one in a large selection of religions that condone and perpetuate irrational behavior. To answer your question, I would ask that their disagreements be supported by a reasoned argument and evidence if appropriate. Referencing statements made by their holy book does not suffice unless they can prove their holy book is indeed the word of god. Then they have to prove god exists and is the final authority. It is not a very deep regression, but it is one that has yet to be traversed by any religion claiming to have a book full of absolute truth.
The only value I submit is that all humans act reasonably towards each other. It easy to see that everyone violates this principle on occassion and at our peril. What follows this is up to debate, but whatever we decide must be logical and never because someone “says so”. Unfortunately, it is difficult for me to digress much into this topic without turning a simple comment into a dissertation. Around late last year, I found a four-part essay titled The Roots of Morality (part two, three, and four) which goes into detail quite nicely.
I am afraid you misunderstand me. Your assumption I am from America is correct while your assumption I believe my society is perfect could not be farther from the truth. I try to be a vocal critic of our policies, both foreign and domestic. I find that Americans benefit tremendously from the oppression of the poor people all over the world and far be it for me to find this acceptable. In the United States, the poor are overburdened. Abroad, my country supports governments that favor our interests over those of their proletariate. Again, I will not digress into how or why. My purpose is only to vindicate that I am not biased in favor of any one particular society unless that society behaves rationally. The United States, unfortunately and inexcusably, does not.
I am not attacking Islamic countries, I am attacking Islam and also attacking Christianity and Judaism and any other dogma that would have adherents believe and act in the absence of evidence and without doubt. Also, I do agree that our middle-east policy is to secure oil for our national interest. This is to be abhorred as the abonination it is as it is irrational and therefore immoral in the extreme.

You claim that Muslims are angry because the cartoons depict Muhammad. However, there is Muslim art that depicts Muhammad and they don’t get angry about that. There have been hundreds of political cartoons over the last 2 decades that depict Muhammad in even worse light but they didn’t protest those. South Park had an entire episode where Muhammad was part of a team of religious figures that fight crime. No protests. Why the Danish cartoons? What makes them special?

Many people in ME have few freedoms, and few opportunities to improve their lives. Their governments are oppressive and violent, they do not help the people. And many of the ME governments work with the US. And the US does not help the ME people.
But the people in ME do not fight their bad governments. The people do not rise up and demand changes. The people have some responsibility also to make things better.

Finally, Mohamed has said that he thinks that most Muslims do not behave true to Islam. If we accept, for the moment, that this is correct, then maybe it would be better for all of us to simply say that we disagree with the beliefs and (some) actions of most Muslims. Perhaps there is some mythical Islam, that nobody practices, that we could get along with.
I mean, sure, we’d still disagree with the whole supernatural/god story, and requiring people to be obedient to irrational dictates, but maybe if people actually followed a strict code of peace, non-violence, and mutual respect for everyone, we could be OK with that? I think that I could.
It just doesn’t seem to be happening anywhere. I don’t know of any Muslims doing it. And I don’t know of any Jews doing it. And among Christians, I only know of a very very tiny group of people, the Catholic Workers, who dedicate their lives to working for peace and helping the poor.
fotomatt, there are good people out there who are religious. Trust me, I’ve met many. The reason you don’t know about them is that they don’t fight for your attention. They don’t wage wars against anyone who disagrees with them, or call other people the Devil. I say in complete confidence that virtually all religious people I know are ordinary people who just want to live their lives. But those aren’t the kind of people who make headlines, so you don’t hear about them. Yes, the news talks constantly about the negative things Muslims have done. But when you hear about Christianity (as one example) in the news, is it really that much better? It seems like all I hear about is the religious right and the Westboro Baptist Church. I can’t imagine the Middle East hears anything better. The world now has over one billion Muslims. How many of them have called for the fall of the West? A hundred perhaps have become ‘leaders’? Maybe several thousands or perhaps even millions follow them? What of the hundreds of millions of others that are just trying to get by? Don’t throw them all in the same boat. We’ll just alienate them more, and nothing will get better.

And yet, every time I see another instance of oppression, violence, hatred, misogyny, murder, or genocide rationalized on the basis of some religion, committed in the name of some religion, I can’t help but ask HOW other people can continue to stand by that religion, over and over and over again.
As for myself, I have no faith, but I know that when people in my community do “bad” things, then I am ethically impelled to speak out against such wrongs. And if everyone in my community accepted such behaviors, then I would either loudly fight against it or I would leave that community.
And the same when my government commits atrocities. I speak out. I resist. I try to make my voice heard. If I do not resist, then surely I become complicit in their crimes.
I expect only that people of faith should do the same.
There are Christians, Jews, and Muslims who do many horrible, brutal things in the name of their religion, in the name of their god. There are some Christians who stand up against such Christian atrocities, but not many. And there are a few Jews who do the same against Jewish atrocities, but not many. And amongst Muslims, I would truly like to know more about the Muslims (individuals and organizations) who stand up against the horrors committed by Muslims.
