I felt it necessary to revive an American legend from obscurity. Marjoe Gortner was the youngest evangelical preacher when he was ordained at the tender age of four. He traveled the country with his parents holding revival meetings and “healing” the sick. With every town visited, the family bilked more and more money from their faithful followers.
In the late 60’s though, all that went awry when Marjoe had a change of conscience. He decided to make one last revival tour and bring along a film crew this time. Marjoe was about to expose to the world the true inner workings of his family and other ministers. Marjoe gave detailed information on how he and countless others deceive the faithful out of millions and get nothing but praise in return.

What a coincidence! I just saw this film the day before yesterday. (Got it from Netflix). It’s an excellent documentary. I wonder what Marjoe is doing today. The Wiki article is vague on his recent doings.

Somehow I am even bothered by this. Were the titles part of the actual documentary or were they added on by whoever put it on youtube? They seemed a bit preachy at the end and they did two of my least favorite Christian tricks:
1. Expose a charlatan and then claim through the bible that exposing him doesn’t weaken Christianity, it in fact strengthens the prophetic power of the bible.
2. They quoted from several different versions of the bible. If the bible is so great and perfect, I’d think you could just choose one translation and stick with it. It’s bad enough to pick and choose verses out of context, but to pick and choose from several different bibles, that’s just irritating.

What I would like to know is what do some of these believers that Marjoe healed think? Imagine that you thought Marjoe was this great faith healer and spiritual leader. You worked yourself in to a frenzy, believing that is was the Holy Spirit entering your body, when in reality it was just a charlatan and you fooled yourself.
I know there was someone on here that said they have witnessed and even experienced the laying of hands and speaking in tongues. He kept claiming how “real” it was. I bet these people felt the same way too.

It’s genuinely difficult to believe that people will still believe in faith healers. These faith healers are all the same, taking advantage of the naive. Most of the believers have probably at least heard that they are being scammed, but refuse to accept reality. They’re probably the type of person who still think that pro-wrestling is real. (this is the part where someone with “truth” in their name defends pro wrestling)

What no one really knows is that he went back on the road in the sixties to make more money and continue the scam. But he discovered that he couldn’t pull in as much money as he thought. When he was young, the money collected at the revival meetings appeared like millions to his young eyes, but that wasn’t really the case. That’s when he decided to get a producer and make a documentary exposing the scam. He’s very good at reading the public and was counting on a certain segment of the public to think what he had done was great and this would provide much publicity and hopefully lead to a movie career. He always has and still is on the make. He’s a much bigger con than people know.

Skids - I don’t understand your question. I’m not some religious nut out for Marjoe. I’m just someone who knows him personally. It wasn’t a change in conscience that brought about his self exposure, it was a lack of getting the amount of money he thought he would when he went back on the road after a number of years absence from about age 12 until he was in his mid-twenties. His autobiography is not exactly honest in a lot of things, but designed to get the adoration of people, possibly like you, who love hearing anything against religion. He wanted to be a movie star and that was how he did it.If you listen carefully to his movie, he tells how to manipulate people and get what he wants. My only point is that he has even manipultated the press and his fans into thinking he’s an American hero and has a conscience. He doesn’t, that’s all.

Gasmonso: I don’t keep in touch but am in touch with someone who is. He runs Marjoe Gortner Entertainmemt which sponsors the Celebrity Sports Invitationals that are held about twice a year. One in Banff, Canada and another one usually in Mexico and sometimes places like Puerto Rico and Jamaica. He uses his skills to auction off major donations for charity and then sells the TV rights on the sports events/competitions with celebrities. He lives in Ketchum. ID and Santa Fe, NM. Marjoe joined the World Peace movement and tried to build Missionary Schools but received no support.

So are those of Christianity, your point? Because my point was that the romans actually gave us something. Sure, we lost most of it during the Dark Ages, but at least they improved society. Romans were the first to use a global justice system, and had very good laws for the protection of people.

Sigh. I used to be an ardent consipiracy theorist, but began backing off of that position, because most modern “conspiracies” (OPEC — which controls world oil prices — and the Japanese government’s attempt to disarm the world civilian population through proposed UN policies, for example) operate pretty much in the open and meet in conference rooms rented at Hiltons and such (not in dark chambers beneath the ground). Also, too many conspiracies have been shown to be so-much trumped up trash, like “they faked the Moon landings” and, in response to Kathy, “the international Satanic conspiracy.” There is no international Satanic conspiracy, because a Satanist is simply a Christian who chooses to be on the losing side. Why do that? There’s no pay off. There is a cop out there (I can’t remember his name) who has been going around and peddling this tripe in order to make money. No real proof of any such conspiracy has ever been shown; like the “Chariots of the Gods” garbage, such “proof” has been cobbled together from misrepresented data and outright lies. I mean, really: if the royal family and British government were controlled by Fascits, they would have *joined* Hitler, not fought him. But on the topic of “preachers” who are in it for the money: who doesn’t believe that? It’s happened time and time again, and the court records are there for everyone to read . . . sigh.

I’m sorry, Kathy, but after going to all three sites and looking at them, I’m less than convinced and not impressed. FEMA concentration camps? Nope. Interdimensional aliens who control the world? Balderdash. An online church claiming to be run by a prophet? Sounds like Jim Jones Jr. to me.
You can believe what you want, naturally, but I notice that the claims made on these sites have no documentation . . . they just say they do. As is usual in the “conspiracy theory” game. Throw in a few facts and then dollop on a heap of speculation. Not good enough. I’ll take my news from verifiable sources and my physics from Neil Degrass Tyson and his colleagues, thank you very much.
And I notice you have shied away from the main point of this thread: that evangelists are mostly in it for the money, live in multimillion dollar mansions paid for by the beguiled, and hide behind tax-exempt status to continue their chicanery. Now there’s a conspiracy with some meat to it!

Kathy, again, I’m sorry, but I checked out the webistes of these people, and I found no evidence. As for “documentaries,” Sun Classic pictures produced a good number of pseudo-documentaries, such as “In Search of Historic Jesus,” “The Bermuda Triangle,” and — my personal favorite in the chuckle area — “Hangar 18,” which was described as “The true story, based on the bestselling novel.” My point is that “documentaries” produced by people who have articles about interdimensional aliens and FEMA concentration camps (with absolutely zero shreds of evidence to back up such claims) on their websites . . . ones *you* provided, by the way . . . have no credibility whatsoever. Indeed, they score a 10 on my BS-O-Meter.

Your statements about the Roman Empire are also flawed and unsupported by any facts whatsoever. Just because it’s on a website doesn’t make it so.
Now, as to the US being an “imperialist” nation. Sure, the US did indeed claim territory from its war against the Spanish Empire in 1898. Since then, the US has only taken enough land in foreign countries to bury our dead soldiers and maintain bases in allied countries. When Saudi Arabia wanted us to abandon our bases there, we did. If the US was indeed attempting to build an Empire, we would never have rebuilt Germany and Japan; they would simply be “protectorates,” or whatever euphemism is used to mean “suborned peoples.” The big guy on the block, the rich kid on the hill, always gets slammed whatever he does, good or bad. So be it. But in spite of our problems — and we have scads of them — we try to act in a noble and generous manner, in spite of what George Carlin and Sean Penn may say.
I am sorry you live in a world of such delusions. But I will share with you the guiding quote of my life, by the Dean of Science Fiction, Robert Anson Heinlein, in the hopes that you might yet see the light:

Try this: provide proof of interdimensional aliens. It was on one of the sites you provided. If you can show me that there are interdimensional aliens (and not by saying, well Icke *says* there are, or citing the hoax show that was on TV with badly faked footage of an autopsy, or claims without backing from the UFO community), then I’ll consider revisiting the whole “illuminati” hoax. Until then, it was just a good novel by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea, and nothing more.
As a final note, I would find it gratifying if there were “no rich evangelists” in Britain. It would mean the Brits have sense, in that regard at least, than we do. But I suspect you’ve given a lot to some of them over the years, which — in conjuction with your spurious earlier claims — makes me doubt that the ones running the show are all that poor.

I would just like to note that, whatever Nietzsche’s relation to those who brought about 20th Century fascism may be, it would be a mistake to claim that Nietzsche in any way would have supported such a thing, and the sprouts of such an event emerged before any recognition of Nietzsche and grew just fine without him for a long while. Just my nitpicking, as it’s something I spend time on.

I never said that, snurp, nor did I intend for that to be the gist of that argument. I was simply noting where the Nazi ideology got some ideas. It wasn’t the first time, nor the last, unfortunately, that someone’s ideas were taken piecemeal and used to create a racist and asinine argument. Take for example Darwinism, which was perverted by some into Social Darwinsim, which in turn found adherents in the Nazi smorgasboard of ill-conceived pseudo-intellectual mysticism. If I may quote from the “Illuminatus Trilogy”: “I personally like the philosophies of Jesus Christ, and do not hold him personally responsible for the religions foisted upon him after his death.” Always liked that quote . . . :)

I’m well aware of Alex Jones. He is a fraud, like David Icke. I don’t “have problems” with what you believe in, I reject it categorically. Alex Jones is a purveyor of “the US government attacked the US on 9/11,” which is totally false. National Geographic ran an excellent program refuting the “9/11 conspiracy,” and I have spoken with friends in the military who saw the plane crash into the pentagon; I have also spoken with engineers who have demonstrated the fact that two planes loaded with fuel brought down WTC 1, 2, and 7. But I notice you have yet to present any verifiable facts about interdimensional lizard aliens who can shape shift. That is required before I will accept such a thing, which is a central tenent of your “international satanist conspiracy.” Extraordinary claims require extraordinay proof. Now, back to the article this thread is supposed to be about: there is verifiable proof that televangelists are lying, cheating money-grubbers. Even if Marjoe simply wanted more attention and money, he exposed an ongoing sham purported to be “old time religion.” Care to comment on that, since this isn’t a “conspiracy” web site?
