Here’s another truth is stranger than fiction story, compliments of Romania.
Back in 2005, 23-year-old Sister Maricica Irina Cornici arrived at a secluded convent in the northeast part of Romania to visit a friend. After 3 months it was apparent to members of the convent that Sister Maricica was possessed by the devil. Many would say, lucky for her she is in the hands of professionals. Right? Wrong.
Father Daniel Petru Corogeanu, the resident exorcism specialist, had plans for Sister Maricica that rivaled anything Quentin Terantino could dream up. Father Daniel and four of his nuns took immediate action and began the exorcism. Sister Maricica was chained to a cross in a secluded room and deprived of any food or water for three days. To top things off, they put a towel into her mouth to smother any sounds. The end result is obvious.
As some of you have surely guessed by now, Sister Maricica wasn’t possessed by the Devil. She was suffering from schizophrenia.
Fortunately, all of the freaks involved have been jailed. While it won’t bring Sister Maricica back to life, hopefully it will raise awareness that there are more earthly answers to phenomena like possession.

They were jailed? But I thought if you’re religious you can do whatever crazy stuff you want… Well I guess people _are_ starting to think for themselves.

Crucified for a mental disorder. It is heartbreaking to hear and really burns me up that the murderers only have to deal with prison and not the torturous hell they put her through. Crucification was one of the most cruel methods of punishment in the Roman repertoire. First there is the agony of hanging on the cross, the ropes or chains cutting into you. Then you begin to tire and let yourself drop, only to discover it makes breathing hard. It becomes a slow struggle between your aching, tired muscles screaming for rest and your lungs screaming for air. Eventually exhaustion overtakes you and your final moments are spent gasping for air and longing for the sweet reprieve of death. Finally you are suffocated by the weight of your own body and die.
No matter what hell this priest endures in prison, it will not compare to the suffering he forced on a poor, sick woman who turned to God for help with her disease when she should have turned to medicine.

Religion explains our inner “spiritual” experiences in the same way that apollo’s chariot explains daylight.
It is a primitive, outdated and wildly inaccurate model of complex *physical* phenomena.
And this is where it leaves you.

You know what’s the funniest in all this?
This priest and those nuns that are now in prison are probably still persuaded to have done the right thing and that it’s the demon’s fault the girl is dead and that this prison and mortal’s judgment are only some sort of chalenge pressed upon them by god to test them.
So, all in all, that priest guy will probably fell even more holy ahnd deserving of heaven for that ‘awful’ prison thing he stoicaly endured on behalf of doing the right thing :)
O_o!

Naery: “You know what’s the funniest in all this?”
Nothing?
In all seriousness, given the subject, I think I would have used the phrase “You know what is ironic about this story?” instead. Otherwise, I agree with your post. :)

indeed, “funny” might not be the best word here…
I wish they used the “eye for an eye” method there.

No, they deserve to have their religion taken away from being legally practiced in the country of offense. Furthermore, the more crazy ass shit that get’s attributed to your cult, the more laws there should be against it all. Maybe that’ll teach the leaders of religion some fucking global responsability.
