THe old testament is the background knowledge that you are expected to know, and the new testament is the new information that came with Christ. If you know you're textual history, you'll realize that the Christian faith is based on the teachings of the Jewish faith (in that the old testament is most of the Torah, or Jewish bible). The assumption would have been that you were jewish before you converted to christianity, so you'd knew this... or, if you didn't, the background info is right there in the old testament. ("Old" kinda shows it's the older stuff, to be overtaken by the "New". Bible v2.0?)
