Whilst this pale blue dot may not be particullarly significant as far as the rest of the universe is concerned I have to say that it is fairly significant to me. I daresay that it is probably fairly significant to all those who are lucky enough to grace this particular "spot" in the universe.

I would also like to point out that the universe would hold absoloutly no significance to me if this pale blue dot did not exist. In this case it all comes down to perspective. Without seeing the broader picture no one element can be taken out and judged on just how significant it is. In this case everything is relative to the perspective on whoever is doing the judging.

Cheers

Hi,
I believe that WE as human beings have no obligation to make the world better, or even to be 'human' for that matter. There is no 'Mandate from Heaven', neither has Nature provided us with set goals. We can choose to make the world better or not, and that is what sets us apart from so many other creatures, not only that we can choose, but we also have the power to act on a scale unimagined by animals.

Khalil

(PS I wondered if anyone knew the name of the song.I tried searching for the lyrics as I listened to the song, but was unsuccessful)

My point is simply that *just because the universe is big* doesnt mean *we have to make the world a better place*. Both can be true with no relationship to each other...

Dave: There's a difference between relativity and the Theory of Relativity. The word came from somewhere, you know ;) Perhaps I could try explaining the link between the points.

The universe is big - unimaginably so. Even from the edge of our solar system, our Earth is a tiny, barely visible dot. And the universe is far, far bigger than that.

So yes, if you want to look at it that way, we really don't matter. You, me, everyone we know and love, all the material possessions we gather, the civilisations we build - it'll all be dust in a billion years. A few billion years after that and this whole planet will be gone. We live for the briefest moment of time, in an incredibly tiny fraction of the universe.

All we have in this life is ourselves and this world we live on. And it may be almost nothing. But it's all we've got. If nothing really matters, surely all we can hope for is to be happy, and to make the world a better place, for ourselves and the people around us? Because, in the truest sense of the words, everything else really is a waste of our time.

Michael: I'm not sure what relativity has to do with this particular clip, though it is obviously related to size and structure of the universe :)

I'm simply pointing out the baseless relationship that is drawn between the size of the universe and our insignificance in it, and the idea that we should take care of our planet. They are completely distinct points.

It occurs to me that pointing out how infinitesimally small we are when compared against the vastness of the universe will not be the clarion call to end all religion - religion was created and enforced as a means of easing fears about the unknown and the unexplained. So to be reminded of our galactic insignificance would only in my view make the religious cling to their dogma all the harder to ease their troubled minds.

You know, to his dying day, Carl Sagan believed that religion and science, theists and atheists, could easily forge an alliance to solve the problems that faced our planet, and worked hard towards that. He touched on it in "The Demon-Haunted World", wrote a lot about it in his last book, "Billions and Billions".

Skyclad: Are you just being funny or are you having a problem with the concept of relativity?
