Global warming for me at least is a complicated issue. Both parties in the US are split with Democrats claiming the Earth will die in like 6 months and Republicans not acknowledging a damn thing. I myself stand somewhere in the middle.
Evidence is pretty conclusive that the Earth is warming up, but the exact cause cannot be proven with 100% accuracy yet. Before you bitch at me and say it’s us stupid, remember that Earth has heated up many times throughout history. But I digress. It would seem that there really isn’t another stance on the issue. That is of course unless you’re famed televangelist Jerry Falwell.
Falwell has a different theory about global warming and the church’s growing involvement. Falwell sees global warming as an attempt by Satan himself to redirect the church’s primary focus from evangelism to environmentalism. Furthermore, Falwell believes that naive Christian leaders are being duped by arguments like those presented in Former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, or as Falwell calls it, “A Convenient Untruth”.
Now if anyone would know anything about duping people it would be Falwell and his fellow televangelists. They have been doing to their viewers for years and profiting like mad at the same time. As for “naive” Christian leaders… Hello! Look at your own unwavering belief in the Bible and all it’s fairytales. But that’s a topic for another story.
Falwell then shared some wisdom from the Bible by noting that God would ultimately maintain the Earth until Jesus returns. So while Christians should be responsible environmentalists, they shouldn’t be “first-class nuts.” Now isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black?

I don’t think this movement will catch on much. But all the same, it’s a dangerous train of thought for a lot of people to have: “It doesn’t matter what happens to our earth because rapture is coming and we won’t need it soon anyway.”

yes the earth has heated up many times throughout history, but there is always a trigger, whether its an asteroid, volcanoes spewing greenhouse gases, or something interrupting the current flow through the oceans. it doesn’t just HAPPEN. and global warming has pretty much been proven to be a significant trigger.
its also been pretty much shown that we could reach a tipping point where it becomes relatively irreversible (i.e. widespread death and destruction yada yada)… sometime around when the amount of C02 in the atmosphere reaches 450-600 ppm depending on who you read. we currently stand at 383ppm, and rising rapidly every year.
no scientist at all disputes global warming to be a reality. there are those that dispute specific results and methods used in particular studies… at worst… but they do not dispute climate change is happening and its because of us. oh and if you look deeper you will find that most publications and articles disputing global warming have either been funded directly by the Bush Administration, or more often by oil companies directly (http://www.environmentaldefense.org/article.cfm?ContentID=4870)
oh and finally… even the crazy religious nutbag Pat Robertson reversed his opinions, came out on his show and said the following:
“But I tell you stay in doors ladies and gentleman. Stay cool. Get fans or whatever. And the poor, they need emergency fans and ice to cool down — the number of people dead. I have not been one who believed in the global warming. But I tell you, they are making a convert out of me as these blistering summers. They have broken heat records in a number of cities already this year and broken all-time records and it is getting hotter and the ice caps are melting and there is a build up of carbon dioxide in the air. We really need to address the burning of fossil fuels. If we are contributing to the destruction of the planet we need to do [something] about it.”
no i’m not bitching at you gas its just that I have never ever met anyone skeptical of global warming that has even read a peer reviewed scientific article on the issue. in fact mostly they just watch fox news.

The earth is warming up due to the lack of pirates. Think about it and you will know it to be the TRUTH!
still fact remains, we do not know how much we are contributing to global warming. CO2 levels have been up before, without it leading to significant warming. The earth is still far to complex to model correctly.
that being said, burning all that fossil fuels is certainly not helping us.

Has anyone ever tapped poor Jerry on the shoulder and politely whispered in his ear that gluttony is a sin. Not just any sin, oh no, no, but one of the seven deadly sins, right up there with murder. I guess he’s so busy looking for sinners to convert or oppress that he forgot to look in the mirror.

Does anyone see a contradiction here? The father, son and holy spirit are the same. Indivisibleness of the trinity, yada, yada…. How does god’s split personality keep stuff from himself. There’s also the issue of the son seemingly not knowing that the father wanted to crucify him. But if the son is the father then he does know this. and if god is omniscent then he always knew it. And if god is omniscent then he know everything that will happen and knows when he’ll change his mind and thus is not omnipotent…..
Was there a particular point you were making with all that scripture Edwin? Generally we like to explain our use of scripture around here with commentary since scripture doesn’t count as original thought. That and most of us here just laugh at it so if your post was serious, the point was missed.
Skids: Some Christians get around that by preaching the doctrine that they are three entities with one purpose, not one actual entity. But who cares about mythological semantics? It is all still ridiculous mental gymnastics to avoid saying the scripture could be WRONG, or worse, FICTION. Makes me laugh.
Ive been saying this for a long time, that many christians just seem to feel like none of this is a problem (due to god making the earth brand new again someday)

This attitude coupled with the “sin today forgiven tomorrow” attitude of christianity is one of the main reasons i avoid these people like the plauge.

@speedjunkie: Most of them figure the war in the middle east will bring it whether they burn more fuel or not. Apparently Islam has replaced the USSR in the role of the army of Gog and Magog. Yes, the earth has gone through warming periods, but that a red herring. What is concerning is how fast the change is taking place. It is the rapid pace of warming that will cause us problems. Slower warming and the earth’s ecosystem can adjust. Truth be told though, the earth will adjust to the change. It is just us humans that might have a problem.
