First, I'd like to gloat. TFA says: "The edge lettering on the Washington coin required a laborious process that the Mint hasn't attempted since the 1930s" We in the UK do edge lettering on all our £1 and £2 coins. While the £1 coin is in Latin, the newer £2 coins have Newton's "standing on the shoulders of giants" quote - science rules in the UK.

Second, what does the Christian God have to do with money!? My knowledge of the Bible is limited, but I seem to remember something along the lines of false idols, the poor being blessed, and something about a camel and a needle...

offtopic - Its actually illegal to melt pennies. The material in them is now worth so much more than the pennies themselves that its possible to make a profit from extracting the copper and whatnot, so they made it illegal.

Kinda funny.

I too have worshiped the porcelain god! Faith in him is painful to say the least! Let that be a lesson to all who worship, you get ripped off in the end. It's sad in a way that when a person kills themselves and others in the name of martyrdom, they will cease to exist and thus not realise they just committed a heinous crime against many in the name of a non existant being. It would be nice if they did continue on to ponder their barbaric act for a while.....Oh well, at least they can't procreate anymore.

"What is it with the US hate of dollar coins?"

It's because U.S. dollar bills are so breathtakingly gorgeous. With all those colors and drawings of important non-political folks. Oh. wait, that's every OTHER country.

I do think part of the problem is that our attempts at dollar coins have been hobbled by the physical dimensions of the coins themselves. They don't have the heft and look that says "Hey! I'm worth a whole dollar." That's why no one uses dimes either.

"Are they so insecure that they need to be reminded every time they grab their waller?"

Well, yes. That's exactly why. Some also use it as a form of circular reasoning. The US is a Christian state because it says "In god We Trust" on our money and our money says "In god We Trust" because the US is a Christian country.

What is it with the US hate of dollar coins? The rest of the world uses them (figure of speech) so can you...

still, what happened to the seperation of chruch and state? I recall a lot of protest that we, in good old Holland, couldn't put "god be with us" on the side of our euro coins. What is these people's problem? are they so insecure that they need to be reminded every time they grab their waller?

(ps, there are no words on the side, score one for secular states)

Okay. So I just checked eBay to see what one of these beauties would cost.

Folks are actually bidding in excess of $150 for one! Are they crazy? (Or maybe not. Maybe their scarcity will keep the price up. Still, is anyone still making money off those Wisconsin quarters with the extra ear of corn?)

There are even bids for unopened rolls of quarters from the region. People are paying twice face value, just on the chance they'll get a godless one.

I think I'll stick with sidfaiwu and pull out the Dremel. (Assuming that the golden coating either goes all the way through, or at least decently deep.)

Do any of you have any of these new coins? I picked up a couple last night at the bank for kicks and let me tell you, they look like video game tokens. I almost expect to see Chuck E. Cheese where Washington's face is. Not only that but the etching on the edges doesn't face the same way or align the same on every coin. It is like these things were manufactured on the same machines that produce the Chinese Yuan. Those are seriously bad craftsmanship.

Scott is right. Despite the founder's intentions, the country was more religious...

and more racist...

and more sexist...

and more xenophobic...

as was the entire western world.

The difference was that, at the time, America was more secular than Europe. Now the complete opposite is true. Thus I'd amend Michael's statement to:

"It's a work in progress. Either this country WILL get back to its original secular nature, relative to the rest of the western world, or it will die."
