I remember growing up as a kid and watching Saturday morning cartoons. It was a fantastic part of my childhood that brings back many fond memories. Whether it was the Smurfs, Super Friends, Tom & Jerry, Spider-Man, Dungeons & Dragons, or even the Care Bears, the premise was simple… provide children with an innocent form of entertainment and carry them to far off lands for a 30-minute adventure. Whether or not you even learned anything was irrelevant, this was all about fun! But that was America. I’m not sure what cartoons our European neighbors watched but I would assume it was a similar experience.
Over in the Middle East things are a tad bit different… at least if you’re Palestinian. Al Aqsa TV has taken it upon themselves to air a very original series for children. Think of it as Mickey Mouse with a dash of Adolf Hitler and a smidge of Osama Bin Laden.
The future looks bright for our children :)

HMmm this all looks pretty recent, the net says they just started it last January. I’m positive the translations are a bit skewed, and would be actually curious to know if what they are saying is accurate. (Obviously edited though)
And whatever, shows like these are aimed at the stragglers in their society who haven’t fully conformed. I’m sure the longevity of their society is passed on through the men, and emphasized throughout their lives.

This makes me think of the old Soviet propaganda cartoons (as in, made by the USSR, not made by us and against the USSR, although we certainly did that). Imagine the grandest stereotypes of “robber barons” swallowing bags of money and the working class and whatnot. Fun stuff!
On a side note, there are few things that enrage me quite like stuff like this used to indoctrinate children. Teach your children to say no to strangers, okay. Teach them to become martyrs, not so much. I would think there should be a line drawn somewhere.

The translation is fairly accurate except for “We will annihilate the Jews.” The voice is barely audible but I think the girl said “Shoot the Jews” or “Be shot by the Jews”; I can’t saw for sure.
Astonishing nonetheless, I’ve never seen such blatant brain washing on an Arab TV before.

In no way we had anything that In-Your-Face in USSR, unless we are talking about fascism. I mean, I would know. My childhood and teenage were spent there, USSR. The majority of cartoonists tried to stay away of propaganda as best as they could. Obviously there were requirement for propaganda from government. But those usually were done in poorer quality, i.e. boring quality.

Well… In USSR there was no such thing as independent. Most of the art was state sponsored; especially the one which went to the screens. The “independent” would never had a chance to get approved.

I meant independent not in the sense of being unconnected to the state (since we are talking about the USSR, here), but being independent-minded. Those who wouldn’t have wanted to put the glory of the great worker’s state into illustration probably wouldn’t have gotten far…
Also, I agree that these cartoons probably wouldn’t be to a child’s taste. But, recalling all the wonderful cartoons and shows made by our own (US) government to enforce safety rules and laws and whatnot, I find it likely that a government by default has little or no idea how to speak to people.

saw that on the daily show this week, its pretty damn scary for multiple reasons:
1) to think that children are being taught this type of stupid information as truth is dumbfounding.
2) the thinly veiled mascot is horrible, it reminds me of joe camel. except instead of smoking and giving themselves cancer, its teaching them to hate any and everyone different and blow themselves up to get rid of couple of the “infidels”.
3) it makes me weep to see one of my childhood favorites reduced to this, if they rip off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Transformers im going over there to commit some martyrdom myself.
Mohamed, its a vicious cycle. One side kills some on the other side and there is a reaction, then that cause another reaction, and so on and so forth. If it came down to it im not sure i can support either side. But the MODERATE sector of Palestine seems most likely to really do something good, they have have to get a voice over these crazy whackos. Mohamed, correct me if im wrong, but i think we have that in common!!

See, maybe it’s just me, but it seems that the problem is always with people thinking that their beliefs are better than everyone elses. The belief itself isn’t the problem, it’s the self-righteous attitude that comes from “knowing” you’re right and they are wrong.
It’s the same with these children shows. The assumption is that the palistinian people are right and the jewish people are wrong. There is no thought that they could be wrong… Or that someone else could be right as well.
And, I hate to say it, but it’s the same issue I see here way too much. The assumption that your beliefs are more valid than others leads to an arrogance that makes you vulnerable to hubris. But belief (even in the non-existance of an unprovable entity) is simply that: belief. And it’s only sick when you are sure you are better than others because of it.

I am a little arrogant with my lack of belief, granted. I do think I am either smarter or better than a god person with respect to spirituality, because I believe I am right and that they are wrong. The major difference being, I will concede that there is a chance they are right and I am wrong, a thing they will never in a million years do. Granted, I believe the chances of them being right is statistically indistinguishable from zero (I love that phrase haha), but there is that small insignificant chance.
In my opinion the more complex the religious belief the less likely it is to be true. When I say true, I mean in all of its dogmatic glory, like they believe. Based on this Wicca and Buddism are much more likely to be true than any flavor of Christianity or Islam.

I don’t have faith, I see it as a bad thing, as it takes away your freedom to think. People of faith can’t even consider alternate explanations of the world, because it conflicts with “God did it! my holy book says so!”. Well, if you’re happy swallowing that, that fine. I just get upset and react when people of faith try to tell me that they know how I should live. But anyway….. How you been lately?
By the way, If I saw a being, that obviously was acting in a way to the natural laws, like god, first I’d get some independent people to see if they see what I’m seeing because people hallucinate, or suffer from mental illness. I’d rule that out first because proclaiming I’ve seen god. Then if there were no natural explanations, I’d accept that it was god.

Hey Mohamed, when I was growing up, my parents told me it was bad having sex before marriage. That’s only because of religion, nothing to do with what’s natural and healthy. Even today, people try to change laws against abortion because a book says so, not on health grounds.
As for the anti-christ, well, if he says he’s god, does supernatural stuff and I’m not stark raving mad, how would I know. I mean, it’s not gonna happen, but how would you know Mohamed? I wouldn’t say nasty, I would say scary( might be), but if you think about it, it could happen, things worse happend before and it still happens so far(war in Iraq), we just don’t feel it, but if you experinced it, you will find this nasty things happen today.

Why do we need to travel to Egypt? Why isn’t the media doing its job and informing us of the different type of people in the world? Were is this freedom of speech Westerners like to talk about? The mainstream media is a propoganda tool for certain Western countries to convince their citizens that it is acceptable to bomb countries to kill hundreds of thousands and use depleted uranium and chemical weapons to destroy the people and their environment.
We should be contacting various media outlets asking why they don’t show us the different types of Muslims? They often paint Muslims in a one-dimensional way: the angry bearded men protesting and burning an american flag and their women as voiceless and wearing black from head to toe. Photographs leave a bigger impression on peope than words. Because most people don’t read about current affairs. Often magazines and books that have a article related to islam, will have on their cover, a picture of a Muslim women with her face covered. The majority of Muslim woemn do not cover their faces.

I would like to do it, but I actually live in USA right now, and I go back to Egypt every two years.
Actually there is something I have to mention and I think I will have topic about it in my blog, where I will describe how people changed in Egypt for the worse, and what cause that to happen.
Last trip to Egypt was a lot of frustration to me, for so many reason, it will take me hours to explain how people changed and why.
The reason is not the Islam, in contrary the lack of Islam changed people a lot and make them scary even for me.
I’m seriously don’t know what to do to change people and turn them back to how they used to be, but in doing that, my family might be presecuted in Egypt, or I might be arrested as a spy if I went back to Egypt.
It’s really sad to say what I’m saying, but I really hate the governement in Egypt and I hate they way they turn the people into.

looks like i’m the only one here at the moment…..but anyway….
i dont think the translation is fully correct-and even if it is,it does not portray the thoughts if the majority of the muslims and palestinians for that matter!!!
i have a palestinian friend in my class whose grandparents live in gaza-how would it feel not beind able to go visit them or have them visit you- I think brother mohamed is right the tele can make people believe in strange things!:)
i feel really free as a feel exposed to both sides of the story considering the fact that i live in dar-es-asalaam, tanzaina(its in east africa by the way)

Living in the United States, I can tell you that the vast majority of the mainstream media portrays the Israeli side sympathetically and often leaves out the negative stuff about Israelis. Meanwhile, the negative aspects of the Palestinians is emphasized, their side is hardly represented in the mainstrteam media.

Well, they do get covered quite a lot on arabian channels(for example al-jazeera), so put the two together and tell me what you see.
To be frank: I see two children fighting and the next day arguing who started the last fight and getting into another fight, and so on and so on.

I am sure the Palestinian side gets presented on Arab Language TV. But unfortunately “might makes right” and regardless of what the Palestians do, if the United States and Israel don’t like how things are going, they will use their military might to disrupt things and create chaos.

I think I might be able to understand what you are saying- but I still feel the agony and pain the palestinians are feeling is being greatly understated everywhere(ie:media).
Considring the fact that you live in Israel- I Undertand that it might be more difficult to comprehend what they are going through.
Just wondering whether you have actually met a sincere palestinian and tried to excgange views with him/her. I guess that will be a different angle from which to look at the entire episode- if I can call it that.

And one more point I feel is worth mentioning,
even if you dont speak to a good palestinian- I still feel that the palestinians deserve alot more sympathy than the isrealis(mostly atleast). And I dont think you need to be a muslim nor have a degree in morality (that is if such a thing even exists-lol), I think a little humanity should suffice.

Hello fatema,
I do feel more sympathy for the Palestinians than the Israelis. Mostly I feel this because of current persecution they endure (though some of it is self-caused). I also have a lot of respect (even envy) of Israel as a vibrant democracy with an engaged citizenry, even though I disagree with some of their decisions.
Funny, I had some hesitation in writing the first part of that paragraph. I actually thought of the possible social repercussions of admitting as much in public. In the US, there seems to be a social taboo against saying anything that can be construed as anti-Israeli. Do any of my fellow Americans feel this pressure as well?

Yeah, I feel that too. I think people want to make other people out to be as one-dimensional as possible. If I say I hate rap music, it must be because I hate Blacks. If I’m pro-choice, I must be pro-abortion as well. If I criticize the President, I must be a Democrat. If I am against current Israeli foreign policy I must be anti-Semitic.
In reality, I just don’t like rap that much. I liked earlier rap like NWA and Run DMC, but this new stuff is just boring and repetitive. I think in many cases abortion is not the correct choice, but I also believe you have a right to make that incorrect choice. I am a Republican, but I think that Bush and the next crop of candidates are not really Republicans (excluding Ron Paul — he’s the man). I believe that the States should be as autonomous as possible and the federal government as limited as possible, and that is the definition of Republican. All this crap about “morality” like gay rights (I’m for it), abortion rights (for it), and especially religion (I’m atheist) have nothing to do with wanting to run the country like a Republic. The patriot act, the out-of-control spending, the war, etc. were are very un-Republican moves. But now I’m just ranting.
I can abhor what Israel is doing on the global front without hating Jews.
And I think many of us can agree that it is possible to hate Christianity without hating Christians. Hate Islam without hating Muslims. Hate Scientology without hating Scientologists. And oddly enough, hate Linsday Lohan but still like the movie Mean Girls.

I do agree with you but I also fell that MAJORITY of the pain that the palestinians are suffering is NOT self-inflicted.
Unfortunatley this I feel is a difficult situation for them and it would have been fot us too, if we were in their situation- I feel you might agree with me.
I think you are among those people who want to know the truth, ulike quite alot of people. I do thereore respect and agree with your views too.

I honestly don’t know all of the Palestinians’ difficulties and cannot comment on how much of it is self-cause and how much of it is externally-caused. I do think that enough of it is externally caused to warrant my sympathies. I hope their lot improves soon.
