Yesterday I read an interesting story here about an Iranian exile that goes by the pseudonym of Sooreh Hera. Hera is a photographer in the Netherlands who’s on a dangerous mission to expose the “hypocritical” attitude towards homosexuality in countries such as Iran, where men can be hanged for homosexual conduct.
There were probably a few different ways in which Hera could have approached the subject. She could take a subtler politically correct route or she could skip the foreplay and get right down to business. Hera chose the latter.
Being a photographer, and having balls of steel apparently, Hera decided to go for broke. She photographed gay Iranian exiles wearing masks of the Prophet Muhammed and his cousin Ali. She also created a video featuring hard rock, Iranian clerics, and gay men. Then to top things off she made it an exhibit at a local museum!
As expected, the local Muslim extremists were none too pleased. Hera has received several threats and recently went into hiding. Furthermore Hera’s exhibit, which was initially praised by the museum’s director, has been forced to remove the photographs because “certain people in our society might perceive it as offensiveâ€. Hera’s response was to pull her entire exhibit in protest.
Below you’ll find a few photos from the exhibit along with the video. Be warned, as the video is a little racy.

“” She photographed gay Iranian exiles where masks of the Prophet Muhammed and his cousin Ali. “”
I believe that would be spelled “wear” ;)
Now, a little meaningfull commenting.
I think it’s a good thing to confront people with what they think is normal and make them think about their believes. That goes for everyone, no matter what race or religion.

You know, I get kick out of the religious zealots that are sooo damn concerned about what other people do during sex. All their crying and moaning about homosexuality and the attempts to stop it are like someone trying to drink the ocean. Not gonna happen, so they should just stop wasting their time.
Also got a kick out of members of the religion of peace threatening her :)

Damn, as if i needed another reason to avoid visiting this site on any public terminal. Gasmonso, could you take the pics off the front page?

What? So that he doesn’t offend anyone? Grow up and learn how to use some discretion if you feel you need to.
Don’t ask that your views be considered over those who actually come here and enjoy Gas’s choices, that’s just rude.
I love offending people; when done properly it’s one of the few joys I couldn’t live without.

shaze, i wasn’t asking him to get rid of it, just off the front page. Let me paint a picture: I’m sitting in the packed engineering computer lab at NCSU, just checking my email, stocks, and other SFW things. Then I go to religiousfreaks.com, all the sudden ASS AHOY!!
I totally was not expecting that.

Well then get used to it; I personally applaud Gas, the more people he offends the better. (IMO)

damnit shaze, your right
I’m actually surprised this post hasn’t been bombarded by angry muslims yet, but I guess it’s just a matter of time.

Im completely over respecting there people’s beliefs, particularly when said people cannot respect anyone else’s other than their own, so to this I say ‘fair game’ and open season.
Im also seriously waiting for a death metal band to have a cover to depict Jesus taking it up the jacksie from god while blowing muhummad, getting a reach around wank from a 6-armed hindu god and a bukkake from satan.
Then watch all ‘hell’ break loose! LOL.

You should start a career in hentai. :p

ironically, ill bet that hentai tendancies probably run deeper amoungst our sexually repressed relgious freak friends rather than the non-believers like you and i who arent tied up with feelings of guilt when it comes to the natural act of sex… :)

I am all for freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and all the other freedoms that people so often tout these days. However, conflict is inevitable, in the most extreme case I would not be free to live if you were free to kill me. So thus we must compromise some of our freedom’s for the overall good of society. In some states we place restrictions on the ability to use and or own: drugs, alcohol, weapons, motor-vehicles etc… Some states have gone to the extreme by restricting: information, religion, dress code, sexual preference, etc.. In most civilized states, a compromise has been reached whereby most people seem happy (or at least content to remain or attempt to change things by peaceful means) with the freedoms that have been restricted and those that are allowed to be expressed freely.
As it applies to this situation. It is my understanding that Muslims regard the picture of Muhammad as sacred. It is also my understanding that Museums are public places where all are free to enjoy themselves. To place such an exhibit in a place as this would compel me to think that most Muslims would avoid it. However I am not sure if that is protecting the right of free speech or if it is restricting Muslims access to the museum. Is it so open-minded as to restrict(essentially - though not through a physical barrier) access to a public place based on ones religion?

AMERICANS ARE RACISTS AGAINST ALL MUSLIMS!
July 28th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
I am a muslim and I have nothing against homosexuality and believe me I hate Islamic radicles/hard core activists/terrorists more than you do. They are preaching wrong kind of Islam. They do not represent all the Muslim’s just like Bush does not represent all the people of USA.
And I am also completely against is racism. This is a racist site and the people supporting it are just pathetic. What you guys need is pshychological treatment. There is a term called “white trash” and the videos show only that. If you guys love gays so much than just go ahead…. muslim’s are not preventing you from doing ur gay thing.
BUT BEFORE U COMMENT ON MUSLIM’s, U SHOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN RELIGION (BEFORE DUMPING YOUR GARBAGE ON ISLAM)…….. and if you guys are unable to do that than…. seriously…..GO SEE A SHRINK… you need that more than any TRUE Muslim = not like islamic radicles/Laden.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
So zak, is “Allah is our god” (whose comment is just above yours) a good muslim or a bad muslim? After all, he just threatened jayman.
Also, please back up your assertion that this is a racist site before dumping your garbage on it.
Now tell me this: When the koran teaches that judgment day cannot come until all the Jews are dead, and they so need to be dead that even the stones and trees will call out O, muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come kill him, what do you do? Are you not called upon to kill Jews? Is that the right or wrong kind of islam? By the way, I notice that you did not say that terrorism committed by muslims quoting the koran was NOT islam, just the wrong kind.
And when the koran teaches to strike at infidels’ necks and feet, is that not a command to kill infidels? Is that the right or wrong kind of islam?
I have a lot of questions like that. And another kind: What religion do you suppose the atheists on this site practice? I am guessing you are referring to Christianity and the horrors inflicted in its name 500 years ago. Unfortunately, comparing wrongs done 500 years ago to wrongs done every day by muslims murdering people every day all around the world just points up how much denial you and other muslim like you are in.
