First, I must say English is not my mother language, but as people here speak English for the sake of mutual understanding (at least for the meaning of phrases), you muslims should avoid doing transliteration of Quram’s statements. It’s still gibberish to most of us, be it written in their original alphabet made of snakes or in latin characters. It’s just like those braindead christians who three out of two of their phrases are biblical citations, but in your case it means bananas to most of us, just like saying “Mohammed said Goo-goo-dah-dah-blablablah-booyah-fart-fart-fart, so I must beat myself and explode the infidels”.

It is forbidden in the sharia law which is not a religious text. Sharia law is man made and therefore fallible and even under the law it is forbidden on the premises that it is bad PR for Islam.

Personally, I have to say that the flagellation is not really a thing that people find troubling in islam. Many religions have had and still have similar subgroupings which find the self-mutilation to give them spiritual and mental release and kind of a unity with the divine.
People might not like to see it and might call it barbaric but in the end that is hardly a big thing for the majority of people.
It is distasteful but as long as it is contained within the believers there is little actual harm in the minds of people. Me, I object subjecting the children to such rituals, I object it vehemently.
Islam does not gain any bad reputation from such acts, no more than the catholic faith from the nailing to the cross in the easter.
The real reason why Islam has gained bad reputation lies in the actions of the moderate muslims. If there is such a concept, which I am starting to find to be a kind of an oxymoron.

Salaam un alaykum everyone.
Firstly, before posing my point of view, let me clarify, or rather remind u all that we all have different religions. Therefore, if each one of us in our rightful religion are stern on our beliefs, we should know that firstly when discussing and preaching your religion, we should not disgrace, criticize or in any way demean the other religions. Keeping this in mind, we could start a discussion.
I am a shia, and definitely ill be supporting my people and our religious practices. As someone has over a year already above rightly posted a history abt Hazrat Owais Qarni.. plz refer to it again. This gives us one reason to lament for our lost matyrs. Although it aint allowed to hurt ourselves, on any other incident.. everything is allowed when we are commemorating the incident of Karbala, be it the mild Maatam(patting of the chest) or the more severe beating of the chest with Zanjeer (iron).
Secondly, to my Sunni frends out there, let me tell u… we all are muslims at the end of the day. Criticizing our fellow members just because our beliefs might slightly differ from urz is not justified. We are leaving a bad impression abt Islam. Islam wants unity. It condemns demeaning another religion, let alone the same religion but different sects! Also, the history u and I believe in are the same. You guyz too believe what had happend at the battlefield of Karbala, then why refuse to commemorate the deceased?
Another point Id like to add here is that the reason U and I are praying, fasting, going for Hajj, and doing all other islamic teachings is because it has survived and was saved by Imam Hussein (a.s.). Had he not fought for Islam against Yazeed and sacrificed his family, we would have gone astray and Islam would have dissolved right then and there, and the entire message that had come from our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w) would have been lost.
Coming back to the initial picture through which the whole post thread commenced… everyone out there.. we need to understand whether we are of the same religion or different, we should not take a stand against and demean other religions, it just goes to shows what a weak religion u have if u do such a hideous thing.
I do admit, im not the most of all the learnt ones, but ive tried my best to remain diplomatic and still portray my view point. It is for those who are willing to heed and atleast give it a thought rather than pouncing on the opposite religion at sight of its name.

I have been shocked by the poor understanding of the Shia faith as a pure beliver my self I dont see y or how Ashura is a happy event anyway. I have actualy been to Damascus just last year and have actully seen the Matamm of Zanjhir (beating of the chest with a blade) happen. To be honest there has never been a case of when a child at this age has been used like this and by looking at the picture the photo must be atleast 10 years old! In places such as Damascus the legal age is 18! I a resident of the UK know that is forbidden and that it dose not happen. The actual greif of Ashura is ment that NO ONE is ment to come to harm and that only mouring his death is the great part of life!

So? In Iran it is on the do not do list, but that means nothing as believe or not Iran is not the only country with muslims. What about Pakistan or Lebanon, where this practise is also happening?
It is a practise that is still around and I doubt it is going away just as the self crucifications of christianity. People performing these acts believe to be devout believers and you cannot prove them wrong.
There are lots of people doing things, rituals and practises that others consider crazy. But regardless of your dislike of those practises, they thrive because people believe that such means elevate them in the eyes of their personal version of god figurine.

First of all, IF this person is actually about to cut his child in commemoration of Ashura, we’ll assume he is, Islam says that is WRONG.
Secondly, I’m Shia and I can tell you that Ashura is like a funeral for us, its NOT about hurting yourself. Commemorating Ashura is about expressing your grief about the atrocities that took place in Karbala on the day of Ashura. Which I’d like to add, wasn’t just one man’s fight for justice but it was an unjust ruler persecuting this man’s family and supporters.
And as a side note, self-flagellation with sharp objects was adopted by the Muslims from the CATHOLICS!!!
