Well, the whole thing reeks of putting new rims on a 20 year old car. It may look a bit better, but it's still a piece of crap.

Instead of just realising they're completely wrong, they try to update their dogma to fit modern standards.

They're still wrong of course, and now it's not even consistent anymore. Well, people will be idiots, nothing's going to change that.

Sounds like a step in the right direction however at the end of the day they like all the Abrahamic religions still have their basis in the message given to an iron age schizophrenic caled Abraham who he believed god talked to.Of course if god was going to talk to someone why did'nt he say something useful like how to cure cancer not something simple and useless like what to eat. They better watch out because there are a lot of nasty people out there who disagree with their message. justoneangel.blogspot.com

Point taken, Alcari. The protestant reformation was very violent in many instances, and certain protestant factions behaved in a manner similar to the Spanish Inquisition. And then there's the fact that protestants and catholics in Northern Ireland were killing each other until very recently. Still, I think that anything which will eventually lead to Islam becoming more moderate and modern is a good thing. Even though I am sure there will be more than a few "bumps" along the way which involve death and mayhem; but I'm afraid that as long as we have individuals and groups that are willing to use violence as a means to their ends, there will be violence. But that doesn't mean I won't support the ones who want to use peaceful -- and honorable (which is a whole other kettle of fish) -- means to modernize a medeival mindset.

A "protestant reformation" for Islam? If it is as described in the article, I'm all for it. As shaz says, "if it gets the religious to stop killing and wrongly treating women in Turkey; I condone it," although I would add that I would like to see that worldwide, not just in Turkey. At any rate, it's a first step.

New Islam eh?

So they're trying to blame a century of misogyny, bigotry and hatred over a misunderstanding or poor interpretation of the original texts?

Ahhh whatever, if it gets the religious to stop killing and wrongly treating women in Turkey; I condone it. Dilute your religion till no one can tell it apart from all the others; try to isolate yourself from the extremism your belief's support and procure.

To me, all religion's and the people who seriously believe in them are extremist. There is always a more productive and better way to deal with your fears and insecurity. Fat and Lazy? The shrine of diet and exercise will set you free. Ugly and Lonely? Welcome to the internet, where people can connect free of social stigma's. Bored or Stupid? Try running for president!
