MASAYA, Nicaragua (Reuters) – Hundreds of dogs, many dressed as babies or clowns, were taken to celebrate mass in this Nicaraguan town on Sunday, an annual ritual where the owners pray for their pets to be cured or avoid falling ill.
A long queue of Catholics, carrying their pets or leading them on leashes, waited their turn to pass by an image of a saint in a tiny church in this town 20 miles to the south of the Nicaragua capital, Managua.
The faithful thank the saint for curing their pets or ask for the dogs to be protected from illness. The town’s priest always conducts a special canine mass.
“We brought him so he does not get sick,” said local resident Nora Espinosa, talking about her six-month-old Basset Hound, dressed in a soccer outfit.
Locals say the tradition goes back to the colonial period after the Spanish conquest.

And to think, I have always taken my pets to a Veterinarian instead. And you can only take your dogs? What about cats, gerbils, snakes, birds, etc.? Jesus doesn’t like cats? What kind of crap religion excludes those based simply on what they were born as? Oh, yeah. This one. I guess they’d say my cat “chose” to be that way, and could’ve simply chosen to live as a dog . . .
But, credit where credit is due: the costumes *are* cute.
hey, if it’s good enough to heal humans, why not the animals that they love? I mean, who hasn’t heard of the ‘healing powers’ of certain Catholic sites and masses?
I’m not sayin’ it’ll work, just that it makes a strange sort of sense…
The fact that so many blogs focus on pet shows once again that they are indeed man’s best friend. It’s great to see so many people now looking more seriously at dog’s health issues, whether it’s dog food or pet insurance.
