In yet another attempt to justify its existence and keep their followers in check, the Vatican has come up with a modern list of the seven deadly sins. For those of you in the dark… the original seven deadly sins are pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth. Pope Gregory the Great penned these in the 6th Century. Short, sweet, and to the point! Complete story here.
Here’s the long-winded new list:
1. “Bioethical’ violations such as birth control
2. “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
Right off that bat I see a few problems…
By condemning birth control, mainly condoms, the Vatican has put many impoverished people in a tough situation. On one hand they can use a condom to avoid an unwanted pregnancy and/or STD, but risk going to hell and burning for all of eternity. On the other hand, they can please God by having unprotected sex, but risk pregnancy and/or STDs. Not a very easy choice to make for God’s flock of sheep to make :(
I find it ironic that by condemning birth control, the Vatican is actually helping poverty and STDs flourish. Way to to go Pope!
No news if David Fincher, director of Se7en, will create a sequel ;)

Op, looks like everyone that has a car or uses air conditioning or… well, anything short of being amish is going to hell.

Wait, the Catholic church is saying it’s a sin to have Excessive Wealth?
Am I the only one who thinks this slightly hypocritical?
But, it’s nice to see the religious people once again striving to keep people stupid and to stop any research that might venture into area that might show we don’t need a god at all.
Further more, if people want to abuse drugs, it’s all up to them. People can snort a pound of cocaine a day if they want to, as long as they bother anyone else. (on a side note, nobody admits they abuse drugs, they can stop any time they want to…)
So, all in all, I agree with 4, 5 and 7, which is still one more then the original list, where I agreed with Greed and Wrath.
Maybe in another 1400 years they’ll do better, but it’s not likely.

I guess the first 7 were too hard and not as popular. Too many fat priests and pastors breaking the guttony sin who are too lazy to look in a mirror. And since all they care about is themselves, they channelled their anger into creating a list of “new” sins that takes the burden off of them.

Does this render the previous 7 invalid? Are they additions? Do we have 14 deadly sins now, or just the new seven?

This is just so that when we as a society are fed up with relgion and ask them to justify their abuse of our tax system, they can go “Well with your donations, we help the poor with shelter’s and food and give them a voice. We offer couselling and guidance to those in need, and now, we represent the well being of the planet.”
I mean, how can we even think of hating/banning religion’s when they do so much good for the earth and society?

I have been to the Vatican. When they take down the jewel encrusted black marble pillars which hold up the gold canopy over the high altar and re-form the sun disc stolen from the Aztecs, I’ll not snort with laughter when reading the new 5-7. And, of course they are keeping the first seven . . . now they have twice as much to try and “guilt” you over. But how can anyone take them seriously . . . after all, they let the DeMedici’s buy the papacy!

And, of course, the this list completely ignores the often greater sin of oppressing minority groups. I think that David, in comment 3, has already identified the reason quite well.

how does anybody believe this, if it is true then it is greatly taken out of contex. by the way id love to see any one who believes in evolution to tell me why darwin rejected his own theory by the time he died?

Turner:
He didn’t. And this article is 100% accurate.

turner, re your post 8, and to reinforce what Kurt said in post 9, the supposed recantation by Darwin has been shown to be nothing more than an urban myth. As I said in comments to another post, that supposed recantation, known as the “Lady Hope story”, has been completely debunked, by Darwin’s daughter, who was present at his deathbed. See here and many other sites for refutations of that and other anti-evolution nonsense.
However, as also noted in the above link, even if the story were true, that would not make evolution false!
As the National Geographic noted in a great article “Was Darwin Wrong†several years ago, the evidence in favour of evolution is now overwhelming. It is remarkably well-supported by ready observables.

I think that all 14 should be struck and just one used:
1. Being and/or perpetuating ignorance
