Question 29

Question: What if we don’t have any law, what do you think life would be without religion, where is the value would come from. With out cops who you would fear to kill somebody or steal? –Mohamed

Answer: I think you’re trying to say that religion brings order to the world and provides a set of morals and guidelines from which to live by. Is that correct? Assuming so I will answer accordingly.

There are a few reasons why one would not kill someone. First, it is illegal and thus a punishment awaits you. Secondly, many believe God will judge you so they abstain from committing murder. Then there’s my reason for not killing people: It’s not nice. I hate to say it, but I’m going to go with Jesus on this one, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Doing something that negatively impacts another unwilling participant is wrong in my mind because I wouldn’t want the same happening to me. I know this sounds like a generic argument, but I don’t think it’s anymore complicated than this. I subscribe to the belief that people need to mind their own damn business.

I don’t steal, murder, rape, etc because I think it’s disrespectful, not because I can get caught or might be judged by God. I’m not a good person to please God and make my way in to heaven. I’m a good person because I respect others lives and don’t put myself above them.

Religious people often say that all morality is derived from their god or gods. This is simply ridiculous, but unfortunately many religions including Islam, Christianity and Judaism make this claim. This means that their followers believe that when someone doesn’t agree with their religion, then there is really nothing to stop them from behaving immorally. I have heard a lot of Christians make this claim, and it simply isn’t true. I for example, am no longer Christian and yet I am one of the nicest most gentle individuals you will ever meet, even in the face of some of the open hostility I have received from various cult members and religious nutbags.

    Gasmono,

You have to put in your consideration that we are civilized at thid moment, we have values and we know about it, that’s why you say that, but beleive me if you raised on different enviroment, you might kill and rape and steal, which I will refer here to what’s heppening in some African countries, they do these stuff so easy, because they don’t have values.

Another example which is so close to the Americans, what happen after hurricane Katrina, and every body heard about it, rape, stealing and killing in civilized country, tell me the reason, they weren’t stealing food, they were stealing Tvs and elctronics although they lived in civilized country, in contrary if this hurricane happened in Egypt, you wouldn’t find this behavior and Egypt is not civilized as USA and we don’t have that much enforcement, tell me the reason.

    @Mohamed

think about your point. i have. unwillingly we came to a similar conclusion without even trying.

“you wouldn’t find this behavior and Egypt” you are completely delusional. egypt may be one of the more civilized countries in the middle east area but i only wish our leadership would stop being so stingy with our nukes.

  4. Mohamed says:

I’m not talking about the leadership or the government, go to Egypt and you will see that almost there is no enforcement in the street, which is not good thing, there are bad things happes from the government and I sent Gasonmos video to show it to every body but he choosed not to show it for you. What I’m talking about here that people wouldn’t steal or rape or kill because there is no law, every body knows it’s not right to do and the reason that our religion says so, if you look you will find that Usama Bin Laden don’t live in Saudi Arabia not Elzawahry lives in Egypt. Beleiving that god exists protect me and you, like you beleive that cops exist.

  5. Your Father says:

“What I’m talking about here that people wouldn’t steal or rape or kill because there is no law, every body knows it’s not right to do and the reason that our religion says so, if you look you will find that Usama Bin Laden don’t live in Saudi Arabia not Elzawahry lives in Egypt.”

you can’t possibly speak for everybody. I bet they don’t have prisons in Egypt either. Egypt must be some kind of amazing utopia, the likes of which the world has never seen, huh?

“Beleiving that god exists protect me and you, like you beleive that cops exist.”

I’m sure god protects everyone in Egypt, right? I’ll tell you one thing… If someone was going to commit some sort of crime against me, I think i’d take my chances with the police, cuz god is about as reliable as a lucky pair of underwear.

  6. Arktis says:

To put it blunty, chaos and looting comes from desperation or anger or stupidity, or even all three at once. If panic and disaster suddenly broke out in your neighborhood today, you’d see the same thing. You’d see it anywhere in the world, “civilized” or not, given a certain set of conditions.

  7. sidfaiwu says:

“What I’m talking about here that people wouldn’t steal or rape or kill because there is no law, every body knows it’s not right to do and the reason that our religion says so”

I’m calling bullshit. From the article:

“In an interview in late 1989, the director of security for Cairo attributed higher crime rates to bad economic conditions, high unemployment, population growth, and changes in social norms. In 1988 Cairo experienced sharp increases in the theft of cars and other goods, offenses by women and juveniles, kidnappings, and vice cases.”

It seems Arktis is right. This sort of behavior depends on a ‘set of conditions’ not on the religiosity of the people.

Also, Mohamed, you may want to read article. It is a scientific study that shows that there is a correlation between higher religious beliefs and higher social problems. While the study focused on Christianity, Islam is not much different.

  8. Naery says:

Gotta love the part about the looting after Katrina… Weren’t most of them american, thus by definition, mostly religious and thus rightous?

Kinda like those nuts that goes off when there is something insulting to their religion, by it muslims, christiand or whatever.

  9. Alcari says:

“”Go to Egypt and you will see that almost there is no enforcement in the street, which is not good thing”"

Then come over here (netherlands) where can seriously set up a mortar, sandbag walls and machine guns in the middle of the street without every seeing any cop (i’ve got that video here somewhere)

    .

On the issue of “religion gives people morals” I’ve got this to say.

If everyone would go around killing people and taking their possesions, we would all be miserable. I would kill John to get his shoes, John brother would kill me for his brotheres shoes and my coat, my brother…well you get the idea. However, If I trade my spare hat for his shoes, we’re all happy.

See, just imagine 10 separated civilizations. Some might decend into violence, but they’ll never get anywhere, probably not survive, whereas those who coexists peacefully amongst themselves and with eachother will probably grow and prosper.

Besides, even though it might be more simple to just rob a store and steal their food, I wouldn’t want otheres to go rob my (fictional) store and steal my stuff. It is a reasonable assuption to say everyone feels the same, thus we treat others like we would be treated ourself. Of course, there are those who, probably because they’re idiots, think this is not a good way and fail to think ahead beyond anything other then their immediate actions and rob the store anyway.

Being the peaceloving society we are, we create a specail organisation to seperate the ‘idiots’ from the rest of us. Thus police is created.

  10. Shaze says:

You know, they did tests on this, and children know innately that death is wrong the moment they see it for the first time.

We need religion like hockey needs a glowing puck.

  11. Alcari says:

nope, because hockey does indeed improve with a glowing puck, that thing’s fast….

    Back on topic.
