In Melbourne, Muslim cabbies are refusing to service blind passengers with their guide dogs or any individual carrying alcohol.
Of the 10,000 cabbies in Melbourne, 2,000 are Muslim and most of them come from countries where they learned strict Islamic behavior. So essentially 20% of all cabbies are Muslim. That means a blind person, or a person coming home from the liquor store, has a 1 in 5 chance of being stood up at the curb. But why the madness?
Islamic teachings portray the dog as a filthy animal and warn Muslims against contact. Now while these teachings may have been relevant 1,000 years ago when sanitary conditions were worse, times have changed. Not only that, but these aren’t homeless flea ridden dogs that roam the streets eating out of garbage cans. They are professionally trained dogs that live in a home with their owner. One sane Muslim driver, Imran, said yesterday the guide dog issue was difficult for him.
I don’t refuse to take people, but it’s hard for me because my religion tells me I should not go near dogs.
The fact that these Muslims are so crippled by their beliefs is sickening. Instead of thinking for themselves, they let someone else do it for them. As for the alcohol ban in cabs, we’re not talking about drunken people tossing pints around and puking in the back of the cab. They will refuse service to anyone carrying a closed bottle of alcohol. Absurd is an understatement.
While I respect their beliefs, I do not respect their inability to think for themselves. I do not respect their lack of education as an excuse to discriminate against others. If your religion tells you to do something or behave a certain way, maybe it’s about time you start asking why. Just because a book simply states something, doesn’t mean you can’t ask why.

I hope Australia has something similar to the ADA, which requires companies to make reasonable accomadations for people with disabilities, like blind people. Like say, forcing companies to hire cab drivers willing to pick blind people up.
Wow. This is just terrible, but its not surprising. Leviticus (which I am to understand all the Abrahamic religions accept) says that people that are disabled shouldn’t be allowed near the alter of god either.
Can you be bothered to find that passage HJ? Just askin.
That said I think this is pretty silly.
Refusing service to a blind person with a guide dog is illegal. It’s a violation of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act.)
Scott, no problem. The passage is Leviticus 21:16-23
21:16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
21:17 Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
21:18 For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous,
21:19 Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded,
21:20 Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken;
21:21 No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God.
21:22 He shall eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy, and of the holy.
21:23 Only he shall not go in unto the vail, nor come nigh unto the altar, because he hath a blemish; that he profane not my sanctuaries: for I the LORD do sanctify them.
@Jeremy
Except that this is in Australia not the USA.
As for the story, yes it’s a shame that they can’t look past what some book from long long ago tells them to do.
FTA
Ms Marquette said there was a legal requirement for taxi drivers, shops, restaurants, hotels and supermarkets to accept guide dogs.”
So ya there is a requirement. But I doubt they call it the ADA..
uhm, here in the sane world we have laws that:
1 – Forbid discrimination of anyone (including blind people)
2 – require cabbies to take a test to see if they’re good for the job
3 – forbids cab drivers to refuse anyone without good reason (good reason being puking, threats etc. NOT “having a dog”)
I really love that Leviticus quote, I use it a lot myself :) that and the one from exodus that says you must sacrifice every firstborn both man and animal(Exodus 13:2)
Dogs are filthy creatures. They lick themselves and others, rummage through garbage and have myriad filthy habits.
and I’d chose a dog over a religiouso almost every time.
Human females being a major exception.
“While I respect their beliefs,”…
That’s your first mistake.
Can’t wait to start my own religion which states that I HAVE to drink and drive too fast…
I would add, we had a philosophy course about ethics in engineering… The teacher asked a group question about wether to cheat or not in certain situations and who got bashed by the teachers you think???
The ones who said ‘I don’t cheat cuz the law says do not cheat’… Eh.
After he chewed them out, he then gone on about how, as engineers, we should see the reasons for a law, the reasonment behind it, not only the law. Do not be good only cuz you are told to be, but because you want to be. Was… a most excelent course.
I would LOVE to hear what “mohammed” has to say on this one.
Alcari,
I feel sometimes you miss me, if I didn’t show up.
There is nothing in Islam against blind people, even there is blind guy mentioned in the Quran not by name though.
Dogs, when we pray we have to be clean, if we touched dog, that will ruin it, and we have to shower in able to pray, so this cabbiest working in the street all day, and they have to pray, so there is no where to take shower.
The only real point to make here is that jobs should not be given to those ill-equipt to perform them. Religious beliefs should grant no one special treatment, when it comes to job placement. They don’t let blind people drive taxi cabs, because they can’t drive at all. Yes it’s discrimination, but it’s appropriate. The same goes for people who’s religions prohibit them from doing their jobs properly.
Brings to mind pharmacists who refuse the morning after pill due to religious reasons. :\
As they are discriminating against someone because of their beliefs (the people they are refusing to carry) doesn’t that make this a hate crime?
how could I ever live without you mohammed :P
So, couldn’t they just bring a bottle or two of water and wash up? The washing is mostly ritual anyway right?
ps. if someone quotes me on that, I WILL hunt you down and impale you on a rusty shovel.
[...] In Melbourne, Muslim cabbies are refusing to service blind passengers with their guide dogs or any individual carrying alcohol. [...]
When dog touch you, you have to wash compeltely, take shower, and it’s impossible.
It should be hate crime, it’s better if they execute Muslims to make you feel better D+H.
The same feeling here, I can’t live without you, it sounds gay, but I’m not :)
lol, your religion is nothing more than OCD… :-D
At least we are not Apes :-D
Mohamed I’ll give you credit man! You’re hanging in there under enemy fire!!! Keep it up brother ;)
gasmonso
gasmonso, make sure we don’t start shoting you too for betraial:P
Mohammed, i thought it’s the dog’s saliva that is so dirty in an unholy way….
i mean come on… most dog’s fur is probably cleaner than most moslem’s beards and it’s brushed every few days!
When you go to the bathroom, in a public area, all you have to do is wash your arms, face, feet and some water on your head, but when you touch a dog you need to clean the whole body?
i think it’s a little bit irrational, no?
also what’s wrong with someone carrying a bottle of wine planning to have a nice dinner with his wife? it’s none of the drivers bloody business, he’s not smelling it or drinking it, and if it were in a bag he wouldn’t be seeing it!
Don’t you think that this husband could be drunk and abuse his wiife and beat the heck out of her, and he kight be a nic eguy and he wouldn’t do it if he is not drunk.
Poor wife huh :)
Dogs aren’t halal (the Islamic equivalent for Kosher). Ask a conservative Jewish cab driver if you can take a pig in his cab just before sundown, he will likely respond the same. Heck, I’ll give people rides but I don’t want a dog in my car, are you going to accuse me of intolerance?
How is this news? It’s tragic, but it shouldn’t be a surprise nor an outrage.
If there were such a thing as a seeing-eye pig, there would be the exact same reaction if a Jewish cabbie refused the blind a drive. It seems like you are fishing for a double standard that just doesn’t exist on this site.
As I have driven a cab for a short while, I have to say after two incidents I did not allow dogs in the car either unless those were in transportation boxes or seeing-eye dogs. A blind can hardly be expected to carry such a box around everywhere for his or her dog but I did expected others to do so.
The incidents being a smallish dog jumping suddenly from the back to front and nearly causing a crash by falling into my legs and managing to lodge itself against the pedals and another leaving not so little souvenier for my delight.
The seeing-eye dogs on the other hand are generally extremely obedient and mostly sat quietly on the floor and were of no trouble. The only trouble I had was a client who insisted that the dog should sit on the bench, which I denied but he ordered it up to the bench anyway. That trip ended at that moment.
The seeing-eye dogs do not try to sniff you or lick you, there is little to no fear of unwanted contact with the animal. Specially if you tell the owner to control it and what it is not allowed to do.
So in a way I understand the troubles dogs can cause but if the cabbie knows that many of his clients are blind then bying a dog transport box would be a simple solution or talking to the client of measures he or she has to take for the trip.
[...] In my previous article about Muslim cabbies, someone mentioned how long till a Muslim pharmacist denies a woman the ‘morning after’ pill. For those who are unfamiliar, this pill basically terminates a pregnancy. It’s meant to be taken the day following your sexual encounter. [...]
the increasing interest shown by many peaple in recent times in keeping dogs as pets has compelled us to draw public attention to the dangers wich result from this espicially coz pet dogs r hugged n kissed n permitted to lick the hands of the young and the old and what is worse to lick the plates and utensils wich are used by human biengs for eating and drinking.(Dr.gerard finstimer.german scientist) ;-D
as far as i go this idiotics islamic immigrants should be put outside of usa i can not stand this some of a bitches
when a person considers a dog dirty then y dont u just leave him alone.. there are hundreds of other cabs willing to ride along with the dogs.. find them..
and also a muslim’s beard is cleaner then most of the other ppl’s faces coz muslims wash their face (and beards) more then 5 times a day..
GOD must be wondering WHY yous all got it so wrong. I dont get down on my knees and pray but I so much believe in GOD and he knows that and thats all that matters. All this silly man made stuff stinks. OK` Im away to get drunk and enjoy this life Iv been given, Thanks GOD.
Cameron–
Who got what so wrong? And what kind of silly man made stuff are you referring to? If I may ask, what is your religious belief system? Just asking for clarification . . .
Kurt,
Sorry for the long awaited reply, I refer to all the religious nutters that want the next man to believe in there belief while that be Christian, Muslim, Hindos or whatever is my answer to both questions. I don’t follow any belief but know there’s one GOD and he or she is mine every much yours. This probably don’t answer your question but at this late in the evening time its the best I can say.
You made certain good points there. I did a search on the matter and found the majority of persons will go along with with your blog.
Thanks for revealing valuable information!!! I found this information and I absolutrly find it irresistible. Please publish more articles defintely looking forward to seeing your postings in the furture.
